Thread for everybody on this board who is or was in the Boy Scouts of America, the Girl Scouts of America, or your country's equivalent of either of these. What memories do you have?

I became an Eagle Scout last October, a month after my 18th birthday. My greatest memory of scouting is the Okefenokee Swamp canoeing trip I went on. I also love the hikes.

I'm nearly an Eagle Scout; all I have left is my project which is mostly done. Honestly, I seriously hate every second I spend on anything Scout related. The only reason I've done it for so long is because once I realized that I didn't like it, I had already invested so much time into it that I felt obligated to finish. I wish I had as good of an experience with it as you.

eagle scout reporting in, my best memories are from when I first joined. all of the older kids were kickass and we all became really good friends and had an awesome time. now my troop is a bunch of wide eyed, immature, retarded faggots. (literally gay one kid got kicked out for blowing another kid on a campout)

I fondly remember my first Klondike camping trip. - 15° weather and heavy snow.
My troop was huddled together eatting the delicious feast that's prepared for the end of the weekend.
Poor little fat scout from another troop who I knew back in middle school comes waddling over to our campsite asking for paper towels.
One of the scouts in his troop threw gravy all over his back.
Years later we actually became friends, but I'll never let him live that down.

I never made it boy scouts. Wish I did but I was in one of the worst cub troupes around. Full of bullies, shitheads and various other idiots and the den mothers were pieces of shit as well.
I quit and never looked backed. Several years later, after talking to scouts and the leaders, that that group of cub scouts was still a problem. They disrupted events. The kids were unruly, disrespectful and were later asked not to attend scout function anymore. They were disbanded.

Still never left with a grudge against the scouts and organizations like them. One will always run into douche-canoes. I just happened to run into the one group of fucks that would make anyone quit the scouts.

being eaten alive by mosquitos because my troop wasn't at camp that summer and i got shoved into provo troop which got the shittiest camp site down water from a dam with standing water. it was my first all week summer camp and I knew nobody else there. my buddy from brazil freaked out and had his parents take him home after the first day. i started going native and instead of going to shitty classes i wandered around camp cutting down branches and crafting stuff with lashing and carving. i earned no merit badges over those two weeks. over my later years of summer camp i did earn a hatred of scouting's gay uniforms, flag saluting, crazed parents, gay scouts who wanted to be tent mates to see your junk, and stupid buddy system shit.

another good summer camp story. local council decides we need more inner city kids. they form a negro troop of ghetto kids. after the first day the negro kids started wandering around camp stealing from other campsites. no joke. the bussed them home a few days after. they also talked shit before every activity but had no physical endurance. couldn't even mountain bike.

All those little shits that gave me a hard time for the 3 years I was SPL, ended up taking up leadership positions after I left.

When I returned a year later to see how things were going, I got so many apologies from those scouts who were now having to deal with their own little shit scouts.

But that typically can cause problems, at least in my experience. When I first joined, most of the leaders didn't have kids in the troop, or had kids who were no longer in the troop. None of the scouts parents were involved, so it was just the leaders and they knew how to have a boy run troop.
Later more parents started getting involved, and now parents run the troop because they don't understand how they can be involved with dictating how the troop functions. Now my old troop is a mess because of it.

70 mile backpacking trip in the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness five summers in a row. Plus a shorter weekender every month. I got to be a Heart scout, and got several golden boots. Never really cared much for anything but the backpacking I'm afraid.

My troop was full of fucking assholes. They made fun of people, shoplifted, told dirty jokes, and even lit other scouts on fire.

None of them got in trouble because they were the scoutmasters kids. They also made a mockery of the badge system, just signing things off left and right. It was really awful, and I'm bummed that I wasn't put in a different troop.

We just played dodgeball and threw rocks in lakes is all I can remember.

needing a badge/rank/merit to feel like you have accomplished something is the ultimate insecurity.

jumping through hoops is a waste of time.

overall very patriarchal. Probably run by masons or some dum shit no one actually would want to be a part of. unless insecure.

They do teach good basic skills for later in life, but anyone with a little gumption can do that shit. Boy scout manuals are turdsauce after the 50s. (I cant remember when they started sucking ass actually) I do own one from the early 30s and I think they got a little better and then crapped on crap and ate it and then became crap.

The thing people don't understand about scouts and masons when they're young is that that shit's about connections. You grow up with people, you all go your separate ways but you have a good connection with them. Later in life someone will probably be a lawyer, or an auto mechanic and you'll be a doctor or something, and if you all live near eachother you'll see eachother for services all the time. And usually if you need something those folks can't provide, odds are one of you know a guy who knows a guy through the organization.

And then, hopefully, you'll continue the tradition of mentoring and raising other capable, independant scouts who will continue on after you're gone.

Kinda the same, luckily my group and the year before me were pretty fucking awesome. We did all 3 high adventure bases (100 miles in Philmont, 120 miles canoeing in Northern Tier, 10 day live-aboard diving in Seabase). We did 2 whitewater rafting trips, went backpacking in Yosemite, Olympic national park, the Tetons. We would occasionally go out for 2-3 days at a time for survival trips. We would rock climb, and backcountry ski and shit

But pretty much everyone that joined after me were faggots of the absolute highest variety. We tried taking them skiing and they complained it was too cold and just sat in the lodge all day.

We tried to take them rock climbing and they couldn't even grab onto the lowest holds

We took them rapelling into this cavern (About a 300-ish foot repel). 2 of them actually started fucking crying while going down.

Fucking Christ, I'm not in the troop anymore. But it's just sad to see what was once so awesome get turned into a bunch of pussies

I was in scouts for years. Semi-decent troop; not much for badges and shit, and I never did get the hang of tying knots properly, but I learned some really useful shit.
Mainly how to order people around. Putting up patrol tents in windy conditions is a bitch, but worth it in the end.
I learned to cook, too. Admittedly, it took a bit of work to learn to cook for less than five people and on gas instead of wood, but it was still fun.

Then there was when I ended up as one of a few older scouts with a few years between us and anyone else in the troop. Leaders taught us stuff, leaned on us as leaders, and we ended up building simple go-karts as a group project, from a couple of prams the leader got hold of, and planks of wood. And hacking together a system for towing them behind bikes.
Terrifying as fuck, but fun as fuck too. At least, until we ran out of spare wheels for the things after destroying so many.
We even got driven out to a closed bridge one evening by a leader, so we could play with them on a big wide empty road.

Someone came to our elementary school to talk to parents and students. They had boy's life magazines on all the tables. All the students decided they should join so that we can get the fake doo doo, vomit, and build our own hovercrafts out the back of the magazine. A whole bunch of us kids join cub scouts and stick with it a year or two.

When I was grown, my mom signed my little brother up for boy scouts. I guess she figured I liked it, and I could spend time with my little brother(no dad) even though I already spent time with him and still do.
Took him to the first big initial meeting at a church, and once more at someone's home. He didn't really seem into it, and I had no interest in getting to know any of the adults because if you're 18 or whatever age I was, you don't really want to watch a bunch of kids play. Also most of the kids seemed like friends already like when I was in cub scouts, only my brother was like the odd man out. My mom might have taken him once or twice after that. I still have my handbook and first aid kit.
I worked with a guy at my first job, who said he was getting his eagle scout. He didn't seem that into it, like it was an obligation he had to fill. Seemed kind of old for a scout to me. Maybe the scouts should look into that. Maybe change up the program. Hardly anyone wants to be an 18 year old scout.

Something that is getting a lot more popular in BSA is Venturing. Youth members can be 14-20 and it's CO-ED (I met my girlfriend through Venturing). It's pretty much for all of the older Scouts to do more high adventure stuff or more advanced Scouting in general.

A lot of Venturers also staff at camps, local and national like Philmont or Northern Tier.

So there is hope for the older youth in Boy Scouts haha.

I ended up moving farther away frommy troop when I turned 13, so I pretty much stopped going to meetings. I didn't want to have to deal with making new friends and the like.
Honestly, though, the memories I have with the scouts are some of the best. I kinda did give up a bit when a scout younger than I was was already a SPL.

There's a lot of good info in the merit badge books though, at least the ones I used (late 90s). I've heard they've improved the manuals a fair bit and the new spiral-bound ones are better than in our day, but haven't checked them out for myself.

Did excellent in all the practical and hands on applications. was further rank then recognised, because i refused to regurgitate the book. Practical smarts are more applicable then hypotheticals anyday. Also, my troop leader was lazy and wanted camp outs in his backyard. Bad leader, Bad troop full of neckbeard weeaboos who wanted the easy way out, and an uninspiring amount of memorization. Scouting. Great in theory, shite in practice.
