Based on your general /out/doors philosophy and practices, would you say that you're Cody or Dave?

If I had to choose, I'd say that I'm Dave... but a little less awesome and military-ish.

From what I have read Dave didn't "exaggerate a bit" on his resume, he lied about multiple military titles and combat operations that he was never actually a part of. In his apology video he claimed that he felt badly about any exaggerations, but never actually came clean in the details about the lies. I think that says a lot, and he probably did lie to the point of disrespecting those soldiers who really did do all of the things he claimed to. He still makes some good shows, but it's a bummer. I've also heard his school/store is pretty overpriced compared to similar products from Mora/GB/Wetterlings/Husqvarna.

Ray Mears remains the hero and father of bushcraft.

Oh well, can't complain too much. So far this board has been a fairly mature place except for the occasional jackass.

I think I would be closer to Dave... Cody is a little too extreme in his minimalism. That said, he does have some good advice on occasion.

I'll choose bushcraft over military skills anydays because that show DOESN'T have guns. The best weapon they can make is a spear for godsake. How does special operations make you better? Don't know anything about either of these two.

I hike, backpack, climb, camp and fish. I don't own guns, have no interest in hunting, and clean up after myself.

I dislike survivalists and don't think it's particularly related to being an outdoorsman, most of the time. I have no ethical objections to hunting, but generally assume that they aren't very likeable.

Arm-chair survivalists posting info-threads of skills they think that they theoretically are capable of doing, anyone who keeps a "bug-out-bag," people who say "innawoods," and anyone who thinks that the best way to light a fire under normal conditions is anything other than "use a lighter," all annoy me, because it's obvious that they spend lots of time thinking about survivalism, and very little time actually participating in outdoor activities.

People who think that camping has to be rustic annoy me. If you do it a lot, it's not an affront to your masculinity to want to have a water spigot and a shower, if that's available in the area you want to visit.

Watch Alone In The Wild on youtube. Other than the first day where he catches 3 good fishes, he caught mostly nothing and pinky sized fishes. Even when he moved to 3 different lakes and a stream with no salmon. He relied mostly on the ration (rice/beans) he had. There's not enough plants and berries to eat EVERY DAY. The growth rate of those plant are too slow. You'd have to plant a large farm/garden a year in advance. The only way he could have survived 3 months was to hunt the caribou and moose which was illegal in northern canada. You're going to dry out the fishing population in the whole area if you think you can eat 2-3 fish a day for weeks and weeks. Not hunting means you starve and die in a couple days.

I go out almost every weekend and, when I'm done, I return to my house. I get food from the grocery store. I am not a caveman, eschewing modern comforts, and I do not need to pretend to be one, just because I enjoy going outside.

I am not trying to survive in the wild. I have no need to do so. I am an outdoorsman--not a survivalist.

What I do have a problem with is people who think that they're ultimate outdoorsmen because they can stay alive when they've handicapped themselves in some contrived way. True, to some people getting /out/ means hanging out in the woods for a few days, or even a few months, but to a lot of other people, it means going to cool places, seeing cool things, and doing a hell of a lot of walking, and survival knowledge is damn near useless in that situation unless you're either inadequately prepared or taking some very risky actions.

That. That's the part that really makes me crazy. I just like going outdoors. Why would I intentionally make the experience unpleasant, if it's something that I do on a regular basis? That's the reason that I can't help but assume that most survivalists aren't really outdoorsmen. If you go out every weekend, making yourself uncomfortable because it's not manly enough, or it's not something you could do for two years straight... or whatever their reasons are for thinking that camping has to be a gruelling contest of man versus world, just seems so antithetical to what everyone I've ever actually met, who participates in outdoor activities, is actually doing.

Do you honestly think you get into SF because you're good at shooting things?
SF is often deployed into harsh areas, whether urban or inna woods, and the way you make it into SF is by being able to persevere and survive in these situations, especially if SHTF.

Think for a moment. SF you're out there to attack or patrol and gain control of an area with your guns. It's totally different when you have no guns, lost and trying to survive.

Whens the last time an SF got lost and had to drink his own piss? lol Harsh environments or not, they aren't in survival mode hardly any of them time. They're not all Carlos Hathcocks crawling thru mud and pooping themselves just to get a sniper shot. Those kinds of things don't happen.

I believe those SF guys aren't as hot as most people thing on a individual basis, but what makes them dangerous is them working in a team and to know a bit of everything they'll need.

Heard somebody on /k/ who claimed to be a ranger say, the natives in the pine barrens thought their survival training there was them being cute. At least if I recall. Makes sense though.

I was watching an episode of the new season with the new guy, it was the one in the Atacama desert and he actually mentioned at one point (right before he drank his piss) how he wasn't as suited as Cody to the pure survivalist stuff. He said something to the affect of always being trained on how to get through hairy situations with all the proper tools to do so. But he also reckoned that he was better trained to mentally tackle the situation, because they go through like conditioning and shit.

After I read his first book I was all over survival, he's the reason I started the whole thing. I would love to go through one of his courses in Arizona, but I can't aford that right now.
