What experience have you guys had with this? I really want to put money into a wetterlings or a Gransfor bruks but I would mind having one of these to throw around in the jeep

1. take a piece of string
2. tie to pencil or marker that you know will leave a mark on the axe head
3. drag out a piece of string the length of |AC| (about middle of the handle)
4. make a line by point C useing the string and marker
5. repeat same process on |BC| not changeing the length of the string
6. now you will put a dot where the 2 lines intersect
7. with same length of string draw a line from |AB| useing your point at C as a starting point
8. now you have the angle your axe is suppoused to be

On that video Wranglerstar ruins another axe. That 'intersection' is just a random point. If the axe is very badly grinded, that 'intersection' is outside the axehead. Just think about it.

In most cases the edge should be perfectly parallel with the back of the axe, I mean the distance between the edge and the back of the axe should be exactly the same on both ends. That's the way they've been designed since the modern axe was invented. The radius of the arc depends on the type of an axe and personal preferences. Some people, me included, prefer a rather flat area on the middle as it makes fine work easier.

Not really, but if you're going to regrind an axe, why not? It takes only a couple of minutes.

I have the Husqvarna carpenters axe and my m8 has the hatchet you are speaking of. Both are great, but be willing to put a bit of time into getting a good edge on it when you first get it. The fit and finish on both is decent, but slightly better on the 13 inch hatchet. I would recommend it.

They are great value for the buck. I got one and use it pretty much all winter long to split small fire wood (my sole heating source). You will need something heavier for splitting logs but it does a great job for anything else. Even use it for various carpentry tasks everynow and then.

Solid assembly, great steel, easy to sharpen and keeps the sharpness a long time. Very well balanced.

I would still recommend it if it was 60$, but for 30$ it's honestly a steal.

Lucky you.
To be fair, the edge wasn't bad when I got it but I wanted to get it shaving sharp. I had to do some slight reprofiling due to some rough grinding so that took a while.

I prefer to get to razor sharp because I can use it in place of a knife if need be. It's not particularly useful for anything but it can't hurt and If you have the time to do it why would you not?

So i want to buy a chainsaw mostly to make firewood, since there's many dead trees where i live. After a research i have two options: the Husqvarna 236 for $190 or the Stihl MS 170 for $240. Which one would you recommend? I have read that the Husqvarna is a bit more powerful and is longer -good for a bigger log-, but the Stihl is lighter and easier to handle, and also more reliable in the long run.

Sure they cut and hold an edge well enough. The GBs just seem to hold sharpness longer and seem to me to cut deeper in certain wood cutting tasks.

Yes I was referring you you. I have considered spending the money on a gfb. I had some good references to the way their heads are shaped, and they're almost like knives really. Very deep cutting tools. Some have argued that they are more versatile than most axes because of this razor like quality they can achieve. I am more concerned with splitting and don't feel like I'll worry about it becoming shaving sharp until I get my work sharp

It doesn't work. I explained it a while ago if you read previous replies. The edge should be parallel with the handle in most cases. Using a compass is not a bad idea by itself. What you don't want, is a blade that has a tendency to slide (slash) when it hits the wood, in other words a guillotine blade. For example, if too much metal is removed from the toe, the axe becomes dangerous. When hit, the axe can move towards you, past the tree and hit your leg.

i own one the sheath on it slips off so you'll want to get a new one or make one,the hatchet is great though no issues with it ,it is apparently on the heavy side for hatchets however i see this as a bonus ,its good at splitting appropriate sized logs and excellent at chopping provided the edge is maintained ,grain on my handle is very nice but that will differ,i would recommend it to you.

you don't NEED it, no. just saying if you do a lot of it from logs it's the best tool there is.

I'll add that I also find a one handed tool much more versatile than a two handed one. I would choose a hatchet over an axe "to throw around in the jeep".

i'd recommend this husqvarna right there, to be honest. great value for the price, and it's versatile enough. lacks a bit of weight for extra omph but that's about it. it's solid, well balanced, has great quality steel and comes with a good edge. i made firewood with it all last year and had to re-sharpen like twice. all the other axes/hatchets i use are for more specialized tasks (falling, splitting big logs ...)
