Pic related.. This baby pulled my rod into a gross pond BC I had a minnow on a bobber and not enough line on my spool. Had to wade up to my waist to retrieve it.

Biggest one I've caught, 7.75 lbs out of a ~1 acre farm pond this February. I was using a Texas rigged plastic crawdad.

Fish of the year for me.

~5 lb'er. Trolling a bluegill pattern Rapala DT16 about 20 ft down in 40 fow on a sunken point/hump.

Sure there is- they taste like crap.

Try bluegill, yellow perch or rockbass sometime. You'll never eat largemouth or smallmouth again.

Large fish get hurt and bleed all the time when caught, especially with large lures that have big treble hooks. Very often they'll get a hook caught in their head, belly, gill plates, pectoral fin, occasionally their eyes. Sometimes they will bleed a lot, as in pouring out a few tablespoons, like in that picture.

Nothing wrong with attempting to revive and release these fish and hope they survive. Just have to try our best.

You just removed an important stabilizing force from that ecosystem. Big apex predators like that are important for promoting growth of the other smaller species. They limit the numbers of those smaller fish and keep them from becoming overpopulated. If there are too many small fish there isn't enough small food- crustaceans, invertebrates, larvae, bugs, small baitfish- available. The result is these fish will mostly survive but with stunted growth. Some people engineer their ponds for big bluegill and perch by intentionally keeping a couple non-breeding trophy largemouth, like yours, or a pike to keep numbers of the panfish at bay.

There are tons of 3-4 pound bass in there, and the bluegill are just in there to be bass food. That ponds main purpose is to produce lots of eating size bass, not trophy fish.
