Hail, denizens of /out/! I come from the land of /tg/ bearing a question, believing here would be the place to ask it.

How much force would it take to push over a tree?

The question arises from a idea for a character in D&D. The main goal is to push a tree down ontop of an enemy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Depends on the type of tree, especially the roots. After a storm go to a forest where you can find that kind of three and find one that fell. Roughly measure the volume of earth that came up with it, find the density of the soil(wet) and calculate the force needed to lift that up. After that roughly measure/estimate how much section of root had to be broken and find or do an experiment for the tensile strength of the root.

I think this will be pretty accurate. There will be an underestimation from sand that fell back on the ground, but also an overestimation because a significant amount of soil and root breaking at the falling side of the tree will be caused by the moment and momentum the tree has at a certain angle while falling down already.

a hydraulic arm that pushes the tree and measure pounds of pressure exerted, test and repeat the average of the experiments is probably the answer

your dnd character however would have to be the size of a large excavator or have some kind of technique to chop the tree down instead of pushing it down, maybe if he had chainsaws for arms.

Alright, I guess I'll explain how a thing can get 2400lbs of force pushing.

To calculate push/pull/lift/drag, you take your STR stat and multiply it by 30. As a Goliath, you are treated as a size larger, meaning you double the amount. Add in a Barbarian skill, and it doubles again. So we are left with the max STR stat of 20*30*2*2.

Is 2,400 lbs of force enough to push over a tree? I'm looking at an average here.

Like the post before. I would compare it to the boom and stick of an excavator. Also you need to factor in the weight of the thing doing the pushing.

The tree acts as a lever. Longer roots would be difficult but it isn't as hard as you think. The quotes here are way off.

More than enough to do it.

The dirt around the rootball would weight way less than that, plus it's easier since the tree acts as a lever pushing the roots and dirt up.

but there's not a goddamn chance that's enough force. a car will get stopped dead by a 60' fir, and that's 3000 lbs x 30 mph.
