I don't really buy into the "small cc, beginner bike" thing. Get what's appropriate for the class you're racing in and your physical size. Learn throttle control.

Till then, find other cheaper hobbies (Mine was rodeo in college).

Dreams, sure; but personal drive determines a lot of that too. Take a step back and really evaluate where the sport falls in your life/career/financial goals for the next year, two years, five years, decade.
I most certainly won't be racing X-games hillcross next year, or putting my skis on the starting line at Duluth snocross, but that's not saying I don't enjoy getting on the race track with a bunch of friends and having a good time. Did beat a couple big-name riders last year, so that was pretty cool.
