You guys have Chinooks eh? They were introduced in the 80s or 90s I think but I know one of the only breeding grounds is around tobermory. I have a buddy who goes salmon fishing there, but I have yet to go

That's quite a bike ride. I was up in Bruce County in the spring on the lake Huron side of the peninsula to look for family tombstones from when my ancestors first settled up there. Its pretty incredible country, it's cool to look out on to lake Huron with no land in sight. Makes me think of the great lakes as our fresh water seas.

Do people swim where you are? I went to school in Kingston and people often swam at the beaches (stone beaches)
I know people comment on how polluted the lakes are but the city would do water testing often especially after rain storms. Lots of sailing around Kingston too

I jut got back from Tahquamenon Falls in the UP. Theres a pretty slick 4.5 mile hike from the lower falls to the upper. Easy mode camping, but it was fun regardless.

About to go to the state park in Muskegon in a couple weeks. DNR site says theres 12 miles of hiking there, which I'm looking forward too.

If they had jobs for people like me in the UP I'd live in there. Alas, I am a system administrator and need to live near cities.

I live on the Niagara shore of Lake Ontario, and was wondering if any of the lakes get waves big enough to surf on in the winter. My grandfather was a welder who worked on cargo ships that plied the Great Lakes, and told me that being on Superior in the middle of winter reminded him of being out at sea. He told me that waves there could sometimes be as big as 20 feet, but he was probably exaggerating.

I sailed on a tall ship through lake Huron and Erie
It was a 72 foot ship

We were told only waves greater than 4 metres about 16 feet will crash over the bow. Well, a week straight the waves were crashing over the bow.
I'll post a pic of the ship I was on in a minute

There were 2 ships that sailed together

Live in Southern Wisconsin, although not on Lake Michigan. Spend some time every summer on beaches at places like Whitefish Dunes, Harrington, and Kohler-Andrae State Parks. Always a fun time, even if they get really busy. But I have relatives who live up around Lake Superior by Ashland, WI. Visit them at least twice a year to fish, during the summer and ice fishing in the winter.

Did I make a thread or post it on the fishing General? I don't remember but yeah I'm pretty sure it was a laker, but people suggested it could be a splake. I usually only catch Lakers and the odd pike or pickerel

Lake Superior. Chequamegon bay, between Ashland, WI and Bayfield, WI. Wisconsin DNR stocks them in the lake and they do very well there. They got stocked in Lake Michigan too, and Lake Michigan brown trout are fucking beasts. They can get 20 pounds easy. Damn near rod shattering hits sometimes.

Lake Ontario is stocked with steelhead which are a rainbow/salmon hybrid and they're sterile. Safer to stock them so they don't take over. I know lake trout were hurt in Georgian Bay from the introduction of coho salmon who ate all the smelt
Interesting now lake trout meat is often pinker than it used to be because they eat less smelt and more crustations like crayfish because of availability

I know that lake trout went extinct in Lake Michigan because of the lamprey and had to be re-introduced and aren't sustaining themselves and would die out again without stocking. That's why coho and chinook got stocked and thrived because they ate the invasive alewives that just took over the lake from the smelt and whatnot. Except now the alewives are in decline so salmon numbers are dropping while lake trout numbers are starting to come back. Anglers keep reporting lake trout with fucked up jaws because apparently they're eating the invasive gobie, which are damn near exclusively hanging out on the bottom. So the lake trout are bashing their faces against rocks to eat the little bastards.

Live 15 minutes from Erie and have a tributary running behind my house that I've caught smallmouth, largemouth, pike, walleye, rainbows, browns, freshwater drum (sheephead), white fish, perch, crappie, pumpkinseed, bluegill, catfish, carp.... I like where I live.

Sorry to hear that. Not the other anon but I recommend hiking public land, door county, and I'm pretty sure there's a hill for skiing down there that does mountain biking in the summer.

As much as I love door county, I hate the massive amount of tourists, price increases, and how it seems that everybody there is trying to show off their new car, tan, or the copious amounts of money they spend on their boats instead of just enjoying it.

I live really close to kettle moraine south (but all of it is within driving distance) but never been there (my town is cut in half by 414 and 262 so it's not exactly the big city) I think the whole glacial formation thing is pretty cool, have you been there?
I want to go to devils lake soon, but I've heard the tourists (again) make it too busy before labor day, I don't live anywhere near them but the national stuff here, while few in number (apostle islands, st Croix scenic riverway, ice age trail) must be worth checking out.

I have a bit of a stupid question..
I want to buy a small kayak. Kayak racks for your car are like $100. Is it possible to tie it down on a car without a rack, or would that be too hazardous?

Also is there anything else someone new to kayaks should know?

If your car has basic roof bars you can use those. With enough straps I would feel comfortable lashing a kayak to a bare roof too, but maybe at least put a towel or piece of canvas down so they don't rub together.

Whatever you do, use ratcheting straps but don't strap it tight enough to break the kayak.

I'm actually on Lake Ontario (Toronto) but Georgian Bay is nicer. My aunt has a cottage north of Wasaga (far enough away to still be nice) and i spent a couple of weeks up there every summer as a kid.
