Tropical Mountain Jacket

i want to go hike at a mountain in a tropical country (indonesia) next month. What's the most suitable jacket for me to wear?

I want something that protect me from the weather but also keeps me warm.

Do a softshell/hardshell with gore-tex good? or should i get a rain jacket instead?

It depends on the elevation you're climbing up to. Temperature drops by 3.5F with every 1,000 feet gained (2C for 300m).

If you're starting out at the base of the mountain then I would bring layers (1 short sleeve shirt, a couple of long-sleeve shirts, maybe a jacket if you're going about 10,000 feet) and a rain jacket, especially since tropical mountains tend to get wet and rainy as you go up them. You probably won't need an expensive shell since there's nothing really tall in Indonesia outside of Papua.

I've actually got jacket in your pic related because I'm a faggot with money to blow. I really enjoy it. Keeps me warm in the cold, and cool in moderate heat (70s). Easy to layer too, packs into its own hood for storage which is nice. No clue anything about that location though

Which mountain are you climbing?

Indonesia is tropical but it does get cold at night at high elevation. 0 degrees Celsius/32 degrees Fahrenheit are a possibility.

And while Indonesia IS tropical, it only begins to rain heavily in late September to March.

Personal recommendation: Gore Tex jacket and Wool Sweater.

If you can, wear convertible pants so you can adjust for heat/cold conditions accordingly.

And bring a lot of water. Water in the mountains are polluted.

And don't forget to buy diarrhea medicine. Climbing a mountain with diarrhea sucks.

Shit, Semeru is awesome.

Actually now that I think about it, my goretex is US milsurp and while it has performed quite well in wet conditions, does not breathe very well.

I have heard good things about the Marmot Precip jacket so have a look in that direction.

Here is a good blog about Mountain Hiking in Indonesia. Contains GPS waypoints you can open and study in Google Earth.

This is pretty good advice. Bring thermals (you'll need them at the top). If you have the money for a pricey hardshell, I've read very good things about the breathability of Polartec Neoshell based garments. Bear in mind that if you have to wear rain protection at the bottom you will want something that vents well. I'm looking to get something in this category too, from my research I'm probably going to go with a Neoshell jacket with pit zips, and mid-height front pockets that allow for access while you have a backpack waist strap. The one that seems the most suitable so far is an EMS Helix Jacket or EMS Helix Anorak (if you want light weight).

But I'm curious to hear of anyone else's opinions on Neoshell? Apparently although its fairly waterproof (10k) it does let a bit of wind through. I figure thats not much of a problem because if I get to a summit and I'm freezing from wind chill I could just throw a $2 plastic poncho over the top and I'm good.

I recommend a jacket that is "3 in 1". Basically when you buy them it comes with two jackets.

An outer waterproof shell with an inner jacket that you wear only when you need.

Something like the North Face Triclimate line or Columbia Interchange series.

These jackets are very light and pack nicely. Easy to change layers when needed.

They have dozens of options available. Just be sure you get one that actually states that it is water proof and not just "water resistant"

About the rain at the base, i heard it only happens in wet season. My friend said when it's dry season, the nights are cold as fuck.

not sure about the neoshell, but i look for EMS Helix, and they're as expensive as other gore-tex. Maybe another anon got experience

I own that jacket... It's not bad. It's really thin and a little plasticy, packs pretty small and is the summer waterproof I keep in my pack when on long walks etc.

I also own an e-vent shell by mammut which i got mad cheap (well, a half price very expensive jacket is still pretty expensive) in a sale which is much better for active shit like snowboarding... The marmot could replace it but it wouldn't be as good IMHO.

But yeah, the precip is pretty decent for what it is, and isn't too expensive.

Well, it's -more likely- in wet season, but doesn't mean it won't happen in the dry season. I haven't been to indo though so if your friend is pretty confident about it maybe you could take a plastic poncho 'just in case'. You don't want to reach the summit with your bag & shoes soaked through...

As regards shells that I'm looking at, here they are:

> Marmot Super Mica Jacket (Membrain), 283gm, $140
> Marmot zion, (708gms) $260
> Westcomb Shift LT (no pit zips, 314gm), $300

The super Mica is tempting at that price, but I can't find enough REAL information about the performance of Membrain to be convinced to go with it...

I suggest just dressing in layers, capabilities to fight rain and wind would be most important.
you didnt say anything about elevation... so I dont know how extreme you are going.
If its a day of hiking... a parka will be fine.

Decent should be good enough, especially since it should be more of a backup than a main jacket.

Maybe use the softshell and break out the rain jacket/contractor trash bags should the downpour be especially heavy.

While you can drop a lot of cash on a high-end GoreTex gear, you can also find jackets for reasonable prices and for rain protection, nothing beats GoreTex.

The question is what else do you want out of your shell besides stopping outside wetness getting on the inside? Do you want a shell that won't turn into a non-breathing insta-sauna after wearing it for 10 minutes in warm rain? In that case, Goretex is one of your last preferences. Or perhaps you could still go with Goretex but you're going to need pit-zips. etc. etc.

All these materials are better at different things depending on temperature, wind, humidity, level of activity, type of activity, heaviness of rain and what you need to store/wear inside/outside of it.

If -only- buying a shell was as simple as just buying Goretex... more now than ever there is serious competition to Goretex especially in the breathability stakes, which Goretex frankly sucks at. See for yourself:

I've had a GoreTex shell parka and pants in Realtree camo I bought for hunting off Cabela's almost 20 years ago and it's always worked perfectly.

Feel free to try out other waterproof breathable fabrics but GoreTex has been doing it the longest and remains the standard.

However what he did find was that in drying out fleece could do so in hours whereas wool needed about a day. I thought that was a good sell for fleece. I have found it to be true as well. In canada most good ski jackets you will find have a nylon shell with fleece lining.
