the groove makes them god-tier, at least for the nice crystally granite i spend most of my time on. my cousin's bd stoppers never even leave the house anymore.

also hexes. they get some hate now in the cam-age, but they're light, make bomber anchors, and are a helluva lot cheaper to leave behind if you have to bail.

Sure, theyll make you sound like a climber. But practically? Just buy some friggin cams. Placing them as anything other than a nut is asinine on lead. Top roping anchors is one thing, but carrying a rack of hexes? Ok grandpa.

I've had a 'bomber' hex which I bounce-tested rip out in a fall. Sure they're light but when you need them they are shit unless there's a constriction. Hex != Cam, weight be damned.

I've never, ever brought hexes on an Alpine route. 3-4 cams, some nuts, a few lost arrows.
The only folk I've ever seen talk up hexes are Brits. And they've all whipped on routes you should be able to clean.

i'm not much for nailing pins.i carry a tomahawk i can hand place if i'm at a real thin constriction and need something RIGHTNOW, but i tend to aim for more relaxed lines when i'm in the backcountry

did a 14er as the belayer earlier this month and my lead was using 3 hexes for every cam or nut that he placed. they're a pain in the ass to clean up sometimes, but i'd rather work a little harder with the nut tool on a bomber placement

pssh, fuck that, if you have a friend with the gear and experience just go do it. go play on some stuff way below your level and have your friend clean it and critique. you could follow a thousand pitches and not learn as much about leading as you will by doing it for just one day.

Fair enough. In that case yeah, I wouldn't bring pins. I recently started using link cams, and I have to say, it's easier than carrying doubles and one link cam can replace three C4s practically. I really like em. I used them a lot in the PNW this summer
