Backup phone for the outdoors

Looking for an old dumbphone to take out with me just for backup, emergencies etc. Anybody got recommendations obviously battery is priority only needs to call and SMS. Would ask /g/ but well... you know.

Those are simple flip phones that basically, only do text/calls and have a shit tier camera that is of no use whatsoever. They are about $30 and you gotta get some minutes for it too ( from what I've found Tmobile has the best deals on prepaid minutes, if you buy $100 worth they wont expire for a year, and next year you can add just $5 or so to keep it active for another year).

I wish I kept my old Nokia though, it was from 2003 and had a AM/FM radio in it. Would have been very useful for emergency situations, but I threw it out a few years back thinking I would never have a use for it again...

I can relate and I know we're not the only 2 who feel this way, was hoping that someone may have stepped up and continued what Nokia started.

If you can find it on ebay... a Nokia N95 is a sweet phone with allot of tech, and an excellent 5MP camera/Video, GPS, FM Radio, lots of bells and whistles and FAT battery. I cant part with mine, It still sits in my desk drawer.

Why not go with something else like a PLB, Spot/InReach, or radio?

My phone's in airplane mode in my pack... battery would probably go weeks like that. It's reasonably tucked away inside my pack, not to mention the case it's in offers quite a bit of protection to it.

But if something goes terribly wrong, I want more than just a phone and another phone... so I carry a PLB and two-way as well. Those both work outside of cellular's service area.

Just seems like you'd be carrying that weight for very little payoff.

mate, the N95 battery is crap and it's well known for it too

if you leave it on standby all the time, it will last a couple days tops. anything more strenuous (especially GPS) and it drains faster than an iphone

Because I actually own this phone.. and the battery is replaceable, and easy to buy online.. cheap.

GPS can be turned off, among many other services on the phone to save battery. Like you wont need LAN scanning, bluetooth, etc.

So please dont speak about things you have no actual experience with.

Battery lasted atleast 4 days if left on 24/7... are you planning on taking calls every 10 minutes while inawoods?
If so.. please just fuck off to your basement.

Huh, weird. I just bought a cheap boost mobile hydro phone yesterday for the charger and it came with a 2gb SD card for $9 in the clearance aisle. Crazy huh? A Smartphone for freaking $9? Anyway my intention was just for the charger but I saw it was waterproof. Even though I don't get good boost mobile service around here, a waterproof phone could have plenty of uses like maps, pics, camera, books, pdf's, flashlight. compass (maybe).

Pretty stoked.

That's a lot of useful applications, but i'd only go that way if i'd know the battery will be sufficient for the maximum time you'd think you'll be out there and then some. How do you do an emergency call if the device has been drained from several days of gps use / camera / whateverelsenicetoysthedevicehastooffer?
