>>11216>how do ultralight packers plan for dangerous situations? By planning the trip well, and having a strategy ready to deploy as soon as a dangerous situation should present itself. For instance, getting off a mountaintop when a lightning storm springs up. The dangers are mostly the same as with traditional backpacking.
>what if you get lost and dont have enough food until you find something to eat? same with water? Bring a topo map and a compass. Familiarize yourself with the area and the route before your trip. Especially if your trip is off-trail. If you lose your map and compass and think you are lost, you can either go high (a mountaintop or ridge) to get a view of the landscape and hopefully jog your memory of the map to find your way out, or go low as Bear Grylls often advises, find water, and find civilization. Back-tracking sometimes works, but relies on the very unreliable human memory, and shouldn't be trusted.
>are you just arogant enough to think you wont get lost?Well when you follow trails, you generally *don't* get lost. It's pretty hard, actually, when there are other hikers you can ask. I have gotten lost going off trail without a plan and without being familiar with the topo map, however. I was able to find my way back, but that's why I always have a plan and detailed knowledge about the terrain before I ever go on a trip.
