Yeah i have experience hitchhiking in europe. If i go solo i take a bivy bag. I've brought a tent when i was with my gf. If the weather is good i bring a tarp and no bivy.
If you're hitching in the evening and the people are alright you can hint them you're looking for a place to sleep, alot of times they will offer to sleep in their garden/house, or bring you to a nice place to camp, fuck, i've even been payed for a hotel once. I wouldn't blatantly ask if i can sleep at their place though, unless you have been talking for a while and really have a connection going on, its kinda too much to ask imo.
Try to avoid cities if you wanna move fast. Don't take rides into town, ask them to drop you off at the last gas station, if there is no gas station, ask to drop you off at an off-ramp before the city ringway(if you arrive on one side of town, people driving on the highway on that side won't go to the other side of town, they would go back in the direction you came).
Always carry enough water.
