Yo /out/,
Highschool seniorfag here.
This summer before I head off to college, I plan to travel through each state in America on foot, surviving on what I can procure from nature.
Basically, Road trip: Dave Canterbury edition.
Thoughts?

As a college freshman, just go find someplace to make some money, while still connected to nature. I worked at a YMCA camp in the smokies, had a great time, made a little dough too.

There's gonna be a lot of shit you need to take care of before you get to wherever you're going to school, and you'll need to be at least semi-permanent for most of it.

Remember that ammo costs a fucking shit ton and to hunt in each state will probably cost around $50,000 for the entire trip. Depending on what your shooting I suppose it could be less but still ammo costs a shit ton in high amounts like that plus it'll be heavy as fuck.

Honestly though, out of state hunting and fishing licences cost hundreds of dollars, and native edible plants are few and far between in the days of sprawling cities/suburbs, industrial/ag pollution, and "no fun allowed, everything is illegal" governments.

Of course you could poach your meat and steal crops, but that's not the right way to do things.

Here's the "quickest" route, and it's 6,813 miles for the lower 48 states.

6,183 miles x 18 min miles (a brisk walk) = 1,855 hours

Let's say you walk for 10 hours a day (you can't, while still finding enough calories to sustain such effort). 1,885 / 10 = 188 days = about 6 months.

If you seriously want to do something like this, start small. See if you can survive a WEEK by finding food. See if you can walk to the next town and not call your mom to pick you up.

I know I won't reach my goal, it's not a realistic goal, but it is something to test what I've learned so far.

At this point bushcraft is my favorite hobby. I've spent a month on my family's land last summer, and the only food I brought was a can of herring. Had a decent shelter build on day 2.

In the past all I've had to do was ask a farmer/land owner for permission.

Ignoring every single thing thats wrong with this entire idea, hiking thru cities and alongside roads is not like hiking thru a forest. Its the most boring thing in the world. I made a bet with my cousin one time that I could walk to his house. Ended up rucking 46 miles in one day. Most boring/annoying walk of my life.

If you really want to do something like this, don't walk and for God's sake don't try to "live off the land" unless you have insane amounts of wilderness experience. Just hitchhike and buy/steal food like normal fagabonds do. You could theoretically train hop, but I wouldn't recommend it alone your first time. I'm considering something similar soon, but god damn don't be stupid about it.
