Rope:
Utility cord (4-7mm). 5 or 10 meters of the stuff that's rated for 5+kn (1000+lb). I like having slinky, thin, lightweight line that can lift/break me and 4 of my mates. Good shit. A climbing store's cheap stuff will last for a good long time. Grit and sand are murder on ropes, so keep it clean. You can put rope in a bag and put it through the wash, but don't use soap, or use something hyper-mild.
For god's sake, learn some knots. I think everyone has different preferences, but the ones I constantly use are the figure-8, double figure-8, bowline, and double-bowline. The bowline weakens a rope by half, because there's no give, and the figure-8 almost doesn't reduce the strength of a rope at all, distributing the weight nicely. Experience will help you know when to use either.
I'm not a faggot /k/ommando, but a nice piece to have with you, if you feel the need for one, is a Sig p250. Nice strong trigger pull, so you'll only be firing if you really want to, and very safe and reliable. I have carried mine in the Utah desert for years.
Guns are for protection from humans (and that's debatable). Not for wildlife. Don't kill snakes and other feared animals if you can avoid it.
