I've never been real camping before but a friend of mine just asked me if I wanted to go camping this weekend.
He wanted to go to West Virginia.

After some research I found Monongahela National Forest and it seems to be a popular spot.

Would it be possible to find a spot to camp this coming weekend/should we try to make reservations or are they necessary?

Do we need a tent and how many/person? or should we stay in a cabin? My friend is outdorsy, I'm not as much but I want to have a good authentic experience.

What other things should I take into account while planning this? We're probably going to rent a car from DC and drive there on Friday or Saturday and stay until Monday.

You really only need a fee things to camp.

Something to sleep in.

Something to drink.

Something to eat.

I'm assuming you're car camping, and not hiking in from a long distance out. If you're hiking your gear needs to be light weight, car camping not so much since you just bring it in the car and set up at your spot.

Bring a tent. A 2 person tent is really only good for 1 person unless you're broke back moutaineering. Bring a 4-4-6 person tent at least.

A cabin is awesome for a new camper. You get the experience of outdoors without much discomfort.

A sleeping bag and pillow will work, but the ground is fuckin hard. Sleeping pads are ok but don't help that much if you're used to a matress. Any one that does help much is generally expensive. A $20 inflatable air matress from walmart works well and I sleep great on them. They can get cold if the weather is cool, but for warm weather I like them.

A sleeping bag can be your blanket, or crawl in it zipped up. You don't need a great one for warm weather car camping. Just borrow any one from a friend.

For food, bring whatever. If you want to feel like your roughing it, bring some bagged meals from mountain house or backpackers pantry. You just boil water and add it to the bag. Done. They taste good too. If your friend has a portable grill, they're nice to have. Then you can bring meat to grill, make burgers, ect. We used to pack meat in coolers and feast on steaks and all kinds of good stuff.

For drinks. Bring a case of bottled water or a few jugs to fill if they have good drinking water sources. Bring a cooler of beer if that's your thing.

If you're at a designated campground with pay sites, and you're car camping, you don't really need to rough it. Bring some flashlights, some beer, some food, and relax. If you want to get into hiking and backpacking it's something you can get into as you learn. To car camp, just takes a little bit of equipment.

If the cabin is just a house, it will be fun, but not exactly an authentic outdoor experience. If it's just a room with 2 beds then that will be easier than buying a tent/air matress/sleeping bag ect.

The deep woods off in the green can uses deet. Just get a spray with picardin, which always feels better in my opinion.

There's some "natural" bug sprays that sometimes sorta work.

Burning a citronella candle works for a small area.

Anytime bro.

If you're an occasional camper, you can get a few supplies and use them once or twice a year, without breaking the bank.

Walmart has most shit you'll need. Even if it's not great stuff. If you're camping once a year it's just fine. As you get more into it, just upgrade your gear, which is half the fun.

Get a 6 person tent, 2 good coolers (one food one drinks), a sleeping bag, flashlight, and air matress.... and you're ready to start camping.

my friends are flaky as fuck and I only think there's really maybe a 40% chance we'll actually do this but it it does work out I'm looking forward to it.

We don't plan on canoeing or anything we're probably just going to go and get drunk and high in the woods and spook each other out.
