Hate them. You can never tell when they'll sting. At least with a honey bee they only sting if you annoy them but you can never tell with wasps. I have an apidea (honey bee mating hive) and I checked on it last week. It was completely destroyed by wasps, 300 bees killed by a handful of wasps. I will kill any wasp I see. Little shits. Anyone who may feel any bit guilty about killing a hornet at this time of year, don't. Their colonies all die off at this time of year and their 'queen' will hide out the winter alone. She then starts off the whole hive from scratch in the spring. So all those demons annoying you will die very shortly anyway and they've done their job of pollinating for the year already.

Wasps can be aggressive, yes. Under certain conditions. And only some species. You should take care of a wasp nest near a home. Experts can resettle the colony for you.

Hornets however are perfectly docile. They look big, but their sting is no worse than a bee's, and they don't sting. Just leave them alone and enjoy their company. They are a sign that some semblance of eco system is still functional where you are.

Most likely it is a European Wasp. They eat bugs. If you keep bees this might be a problem, usually it is a blessing. They are a top level predator of the insect world and they know. Usually they are very calm. They can get aggressive if you touch them or if you threaten their nest. Their stingers don't have hooks and they can sting multiple times unlike bees. If you have been attacked or killed one by accident you should leave the area, wash, and change your clothes because they have a pheromone which makes them aggressive.
