Hello.
I'm to go traveling with a friend of mine in about a month, and was wondering if it'll be fine to use a tarp instead of a tent. I've only used tents before and I'd like to know if it'll be fine even if it for example began raining.

Yes it's fine during rain assuming you set it up correctly of course, but remember bugnet and/or spray.

Anywhere rainy you will need an elevated bed (twigs and ferns work) to keep out of the mud. Also fold your corners, tarps can keep rain out but they also keep rain in.

Practice first and you'll be fine.

Without a good fire or a good bag I would not enjoy camping like this in 50 degree weather.

Idk it depends like anon said. If you find a nice spot where you wount get as much rain under your tarp, thats ideal. But a big enough tarp will offer enough weather protection. Dig a little trench in the ground for water to travel if it gets bad I guess. Thats why some people pair up bivys with tarps for that extra layer of protection. I wouldnt use one where there would be heavy snow or heavy rain. But really tarps are very versatile and will go most places just fine. They can go well below 50 degrees. Temperature is more a factor of your sleeping bag.

I was thinking about practicing it over the weekend. Btw, trip will be 4 days long if it affects the evaluations.

I've got a DD 3x3 and that thing is pretty big. I recommend you get a light bivvy as well, and maybe a cheap foam sleeping mat.

I've found that by the time I piece together all the stuff I need for a tarp (and maybe a second for the ground), bug netting, rigging, etc., I've exceeded the weight and complexity of a comparable tent.

Tarps make sense for certain conditions, but living for a month, I think I'd take a good tent.

Just learn how to tie a good truckers knot for the ridge line and a slip knot for everything else. There's thousands of ways to set them up, the easiest is the A-frame and it'll work fine in just about any situation.

Not if you want to get tarp under you. You'll need about 4m X 5m, just buy something cheap from the hardwarestore, that will do for one or 2 trips, it's cheap and it doesn't weigh much.

But seriously, it's disingenous to not count rope in the hammock weight. There is no way a hammock weighs 280g with harness, and you are still getting a bug party.

that works out to 1815g, and it can go far lighter with a summer rated bag and pad.
