Anyone here use esbit cubes?

Theres a fire danger this week for my area so no lovely wood fire.
Looking for another way to boil water

These seem like a cheap alternative rather than buying a jet boil, but do they work?

They're okay. You can boil a little water with it, it's easy to light, and it doesn't take that much space.

I own both, but I prefer sticking with my jet boil. Esbit cubes just don't have the same charm.

I've got a couple esbit stoves, the square one and one that is just a small square tray for the fuel tab and then three legs that fold against one another when not in use. I have used them maybe one time each, only got them because they were $4 each on clearance.

That's hard to pin down exactly because the quality of the fuel mix, the efficiency of the stove model and things like altitude and temperature are going to affect burn time.

A well designed stove with a regulator and a heat distributor, like a jetboil or MSR reactor, is definitely going to maximize fuel usage.

A benchmark for a top shelf stove would be 3-3.5 hours or about 20ish liters of water per 8oz canister, but even a cheap stove should get a couple hours out of an 8oz canister.

a windscreen is a must, even if it doesn't feel windy. metal foil wrapped around the stove and pot/cup works just fine.

one esbit brand tab reliably brings 500 ml of water to a gentle boil for me. I use the titanium wing stove and a snowpeak titanium cup. factor in cold temps, cold water, and so on.

don't plan to cook over esbit or do anything more elaborate than boiling water though

Got this and used it for a long period.
Always used the alcohol burner, never even thought to use the cubes.
It is just more efficient.

Same experience here, good stuff for tea, instant oatmeal or an instead noodle soup. Not good for cooking.

Also want to stress that a windscreen (some rocks do the jobs) is a must.

Have this as well. Only complaint is on long distance hikes i was having to bring a pound (16oz) or more of fuel. I bought one of those Chinese pocket rocket knockoffs for $8US from Amazon. A year later and it is still working great. A 4oz gas canister lasts longer than 16oz of denatured alcohol. The "pocket rocket" boils water faster as well.

How i use esbit. I think esbit is pretty handy, it does not take a lot of space, and is okay efficient. It's cheaper to make this instead of a jetboil and weighs less. In my setup it boils 350 ml in 4-5 minutes.

the only downside is the residue it leaves on cups- it's by far the cleanest burning of the solid fuels but it still leaves that oily mess on the bottom of your mug.

despite that, like I said it's still quite nice and easy to use

I have a super cheap coughlan or uncle bens brand one. It's got two settings, off and rocket, but it works. As long as you're not cooking a turkey dinner the cans last about a week boiling a camp cup of water three times a day.

Why not make a small wood stove with a large soup can? It won't be considered an open flame (which I assume is your restriction) and with small sticks you can make plenty of heat. Also beer can stove and a bottle of heet is very good alternative.

You'd need some sort of spark arrestor over the top, airborne embers are the main concern with burning wood rather than the flame being "open".

Also unless the can was quite large you'd need some kind of bellows to get it to burn hot enough to boil water.

But yeah considering the prices one can get a factory made stove for these days, and how economically they'll run on cans of isobutane, and how much heat they'll put out, building one as your primary cooking stove while /out/ is false economy.
