hello. first time posting here. I've always liked this board but never had a reason to post here. thankfully now i do

can any anon recommend any good books, people to learn from or any real life advice for a man trying to learn bushcraft? i have the time to learn, but need a place to start

did you read the sticky? its a good place to start.
also just lurkmore. monitor threads that pique you interest. jump into threads and ask questions. always lots of discussion on gear, etc.
sometimes easier to get involved in an active thread.

I'm american but used to live in northern ireland. While I was there I picked up a copy of the SAS survival guide. I don't know if they sell it in the US. It is not going to teach you to go Robinson Caruso buck naked with a pen knife, but I keep it next to my shitter and peruse it at will. I would trust what I learned from it to treat trauma or eat wild mushrooms, but I can (and have) executed some pretty solid shelter ideas he has in there, snow caves etc.

My advice is to consume as much as you can in books, internet, TV shows etc and expect it to be absolutely useless if you are suddenly in a survival sotuation. What its good for is trying out on a planned trip, in a controlled situation, and gaining the actual experience you can trust and rely on if you do find yourself in an emergency.

This book is a pretty decent starting place. If nothing else it should give you terms to google.

other than that, lurk here, but keep in mind that 80-90% of the threads are butthurt gearfags discussing why their arbitrary favorite brand of knife/axe/you_name_it is the very best here is. what i'm trying to say is: don't get sucked into the silly commercial-like gear discussion. skill and experience matters, not equipment.
