Forget about the tourniquet. If you have to ask what you missed then you don't know how or when to use one, and you'll almost certainly do more harm than good.

Vet wrap is good for serious bandaging or instead of a tourniquet. That's the kind of thing I will leave to the pros. Is there another use for it?

Benadryl is only good for allergies in the US. The mixture is just a cough syrup here, and I don't see a use for it.

Some clove oil might be advisable. Clove is both antiseptic and anesthetic, so it's really useful. Pleasant smelling and tasting also. If you don't know where to get clove oil, it's a major ingredient in Oragel, you can substitute that. If you need to stitch or cut, numbing it makes a huge difference.

Some people like moleskin for blisters. But if you're carrying medical tape, I'd say just use that. I like Alton Brown's kitchen philosophy: no single-purpose items.

I don't carry a tourniquet. If I'd be hurt so I need it, I'm dead anyway. It'll buy you valuable time if you're close to help, but I'm not going to be. Likewise the first aid booklet. Study it at home, and leave it there. In an emergency you don't have time to read up on procedures. Bring it if it makes you feel better to have it, but then read it again.

I say get a compressing type wrap, not familiar with the American brands, but pressure is the number one cure for bleeding. Most cuts you can pack some gauze on and press that fucker down, and it will do you well.

Med wise, you want to plan for what you might experience - relief of muscle pain and sprains (ibuprofen), relief of allergies and to help sleep (diphenhydramine), relief of nausea or diarrhea (diphenhydrinate, immodium), relief of bug bites or burns (aloe, petroleum jelly maybe). What else... raw liquid honey for wounds (disinfects and protects better than most modern analogues), aspirin if you want to cover your ass for someone showing MI symptoms, iodine for wound irrigation (first with cleanish water, then iodine diluted - never alcohol or hydrogen peroxide). Don't bother with activated charcoal, it's better to drink a shit ton if you suspect poisoning.

I would suggest steri strips for wound closures. Super glue can be tricky, you won't have the sterile stuff, and you gotta apply it in a way to protect the surrounding tissue. Bring an empty 20 c.c. syringe to irrigate wounds or eyes. Consider alternative wound dressings - tegaderm is a flexible film that will play nicer with moving bits of skin. Something to keep people in shock warm - emergency blanket or those hand warmers. A headlamp so you can work with both hands in the dark. A bandana will help make slings or bandages. Quicklclot I guess if you foresee bigger bleeds, but if it doesn't stop after 15 minutes of uninterrupted, strong pressure (gotta do it right if you're doing it), then you probably should already be en route to medical help.

Keep the various components in their own plastic bags - helps organize and waterproof them. And please don't bring hardcore trauma shit - if you think you can use a suture kit, decompression needle or airway innawoods, you're fooling yourself and will only worsen their condition.

Here's how to cut that down if you wish: no need for sterile gloves, if you're thinking the proper packaged ones. Woods aren't sterile, and you won't change much with your hands being so if you don't have a complete sterile field and a scrub nurse handing you the gauze.

Drop the gauze pads in favor of a roll - more versatile, less packaging space. Alcohol pads are useless - they won't disinfect skin (unless you rub viciously for 4+ minutes), they won't clean instruments and they kill healthy cells in wound beds. Likewise, scissors aren't necessary if you have any form of knife, and are just a bulky item. Replace with a pocket swiss knife with scissors/tweezers if you really want.

Yo. Long time/first time.

I got a gnarly cut a while back and I have no medical care. I'm not terribly fond of wide scars, so I'd like to learn how to sew sutures just in case something like this happens again. Anyone have a how-to for sutures?

I imagine I'll need some type of sewing kit. Is a medical grade kit required, or will a regular sowing kit suffice?

If you are adamant on having it as an option (steri strips or superglue are preferable in most cases), definitely get med grade stuff. Likely easy to obtain online, or find a friend who works in a hospital and can swipe some kits from the stock room.

I highly suggest looking up the proper technique (ie use of curved needle, maintaining appropriate skin tension, tying off). Go to a butcher or an Asian supermarket and buy some pig feet or similar "body chunk". Make some cuts and tears, then practice closing them.

Use Povidone-iodine. It's the reddish liquid they use in surgery. It's less toxic than pure iodine solution and it doesn't hurt in open wounds. You can use it to irrigate and disinfect, then put the bandage right on it.

I use it exclusively and i never get swollen cuts. It looks gruesome because it's red. But it feels much less aggressive in a wound than even water.

Of course if you planted your palm into fine gravel or sand I'd still flush with water first, just so that I wouldn't use up my whole squeeze bottle of Povidone-iodine in one go. It isn't expensive, but it keeps forever.

There's solution for open wounds and also gel for bandaging.

If you or someone is in serious shit, shock is going to be a huge issue. Besides all the spare warm clothes you got and the space blanket I found that the little chemical 8 hour hand warmers are absolutely amazing for staying warm under mylar. It's obscene how much heat they put out and if you have to emergency bivvy, you'll stay warm and toasty all night. I keep two of them in my highly minimal kit.

It is effective against all kinds of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and it doesn't build resistances like topical antibiotics.

It doesn't have to be dissolved in alcohol and it has a slow release functionality of the iodine, so it is very tolerable for body cells. Pair this with a time release hydrogel and you have a bandage-and-forget solution where infection stands no chance.

The only counter indication seems to be a thyroid condition where any iodine is tricky.

I'm liking this more and more.

I guess some US cops might consider it paraphernalia, but it'd be in the sterile wrapper.

The idea is to be able to drain a hematoma or pus in case it gets you stuck and unable to put on your boots or something like that.

I'm sure there's other survival uses as well. I just don't know them.

Well if there's a gushing wound I'd like to have something to stop it and apply a pressure bandage. Same with the glue, it helps you keep going if you must in spite of severe injury.

The idea is to be prepared for the worst until help arrives = minutes to hours, and retain mobility if at all possible.

This is a subject that's been in and out of pre-hospital protocol for the last little while. The consensus seems to be that it's acceptable if nothing else is working to stop a deadly bleed, and that the hazards are generally over-hyped and date back to before the golden hour was a thing.

i glue together cuts that are in a very bad place for bandage and open up all the time instead of sutures.

i also use superglue to repair broken split / nails they are good as new after.

I advise you listen to the two responses already given to this. And I add: Get some "moleskin" antibiotic/liquid bandaid instead. Sometimes this is also called "nuskin" I think is the brand name. It's a great liquid with antibiotics in it that hardens and seals a wound.

Be warned, it does sting like a BITCH if the wound is deep enough but it is powerful and very useful.
