Do you guys modify your gear? Why/why not?

i sew MOLLE-style straps to my Fjällräven Helags 45l backpack, so i could equip it with my molle-pouches. the smaller one is my first aid kit, the bigger one is for fire/energy-stuff stores my esbit-heater, a lighter, lighterfluid, tinder, batteries, flashlight, 3 pens and a small notebook.

i can remove the straps the same way i sew them on: by hand. no permanent damage done, since i can reseal the outer compartement for maps and stuff, where the straps are sewn on.
however, think what you want

Custom LK35 modded, not in this pic but I have added some swedish mag pouches on the side. one will be a med pouch and the other I'm not sure yet. Can put a axe or skis behind the pouches too.

ever think about getting the maxpedition rolly polly bag, or the REI flash 18?

I recently bought a goruck GR1 and a LK35 as well. Excited to repair the swedish ruck and maybe mod it a little maybe . I bought it from the Kommando store in "serviceable" condition, so it needs some work.

Love Maxpedition but not the price, would buy their Gyrfalcon in a heartbeat or a versipack. There stuff is a bit tacticool but the additional colors help. As for the rolly polly I don't like the straps and for the price I could get a camelbak mule on ebay.

And here's the upgrade I did, only one side is done. Note how it's not directly attached, used a old web belt to attach the pouches so I could remove them with ease. Also I can slip things behind it, just need to add a paracord loop in the eyelets to hold a axe. Plus a bit of webbing on the bottom to hold it in place if it's a big axe or skis.

sweet collection you got there. I would like to buy some more mil surp bags to add to my little collection. I got a british bergen bag, a couple of ALICE bags, and the LK35. Wish I had a couple more LK35s. My friend also has a 35 and he loves it as well. modded it out like how you did but with alice and molle gear.

I have a bunch more, here's a large ALICE pack I modded. Took out the back so it's the length of a large alice but more narrow than a medium one. Plus the 3 front pouches become 2 side pouches and a front one. Still need to make frame loops for it because the ones I added were too close.

Not sure if this fits here, but I made a few mods to my kukri.

- stained the sheath black
- reshaped the handle to fit my hand better
- added paracord to the handle to make it more secure
- put paracord loops on the chakmak and karda to make them easier to get out of the sheath
