how important is weight restrictions in snowshoes?

i'm picking snowshoes next week for general winter mountaineering, but being around 80 kg, it seems that my weight plus gear will surpass weight restriction on every snowshoe available here in my country. i'm aware there's a lot of factors that will determine the snowshoe performance, but is weight a big deal in this matter?

If you're worried about being too heavy rendering them ineffective you can either make your own, get the extensions or use some long cross country skis with skins.

For myself, I have a pair of MSR Lightning Axis snowshoes. For days that I have a heavier pack and/or the snow is very light, I have the additional 5" tails which make the shoe nearly 30" long.

If you go on Amazon and read some of the reviews, there are dudes who are quite large who have used these with great results.

Not that important. Any snowshoe will have better flotation than postholing. The heavier you are, the more you'll sink in, no matter the weight limit. Some ultra lighters use kids' snowshoes to save weight, you're just looking for something to prevent you from going waist deep where you might not be able to extricate yourself. The weakest snows are dry, fresh powder and late season afternoon-warmed uncompressed slush. In that stuff you'll sink in at least 8" unless your snowshoes are the size of dinner tables.

Also, if the terrain is fairly unobstructed then skis are better. Also, check out Northern Lites snow shoes for lighter options (don't have heel elevators so kinda suck for steep uphills).

i see. i was thinking in getting msr revo ascent, as the shoe frame seems to be the most durable, or at least more so than tsl outdoor's plastic construction, which is the other brand available here (along with balda's, but i've heard nothing but complaints from them)

skis are out of the question for now, as my skills aren't that great to go down from a mountain. also, andes have some nasty rocky slopes in any season. i'm hoping snow will be packed enough so the snowshoes don't have a big beating

I've also had time in these last winter while hiking around in Switzerland. With the 5" extensions I was able to walk anywhere.

The issue I have with the pair your considering is how open the front is. Look at those, then look at mine. The front basket of mine are much more closed off.

I have the MSR ascend ( biggest black model) and I weight 85kg, and they held my weight in 50cm off fresh light snow. The aluminium frame is not that strong, it can ne damaged if the snowshoes touch each other while walking.
