I put a savage axis XP on lay away for my first hunting rifle, It's in .308. Seemed good enough as a deer zapper under 300 yards. What are /out/'s thoughts I already know it lacks the accu-trigger and the scope it comes with is a turd, I see myself buying a luepold 3-9x40 before next deer season. Picture unrelated

I have friends who've used it as a first rifle without any major complaints other than not being able to hit anything, but I don't think that's the rifle's fault. Good call on the caliber, but if you can afford a better rifle then you should do it.

I've had a Savage Axis II XP in .243 since last August. It was my first rifle. The scope was just a couple inches off at 100 yds so was easy to zero in. I really do love this gun. The scope isn't total garbage; I still have the stock one on mine, and it works just fine. In the pic you can see I added a cheek riser and bipod.

I have 2 hog kills with it so far, 100 yds and 75 yards. Both perfectly placed, quick kills. The gun is more than good enough, you just have to get your shooting up to par before getting into the woods, expecting to humanely kill a deer at 250+ yds.

You made a good choice, anon, I'd stick with it. I almost wish I got a .308... almost.

also, the accutrigger is the best part of savage guns.

A few years ago savage put together a professional shooting team using completely stock savage rifles that cost less than $1500 each. They won the national championship against custom built guns costing $20k+. Take from it what you will, but Savage makes an accurate rifle.

A friend of mine who is a state trooper has the same rifle, axis xp in .308, he says it's great. Another friend of mine (Iraq war vet) has a Remington 770 in .308, which is a competitor to the axis, and he says is garbage. I added the trooper and vet part to demonstrate they know their way around a gun, and I trust their opinions.

I personally have a Savage 10fp HS precision, and love it. I also have a 10fp in .223
