Iowafag here,
Our fall generally lasts from mid/late September to early November, after that it's balls cold until late march, and even then it's wet as shit.
It's bretty comfy, wear around light jackets and thermal shirts, leaves become very vibrant hues of oranges, reds, and yellows, with the occasional purple thrown in.
Perfect time for camping, in my opinion, because it's usually drier than summer and spring, and you get to go full jeans and flannel on it, fires are actually needed instead of just adding to the heat. The dreadful humidity is either gone or not very noticeable. Most of the outdoor casuals/obnoxious partiers are no longer camping, leaving the woods nice and quiet for weekend camping sexytime.
The cooler weather makes fishing more fun, imho. The only hunting you have to worry about is birds, so very small chance of being shot if not wearing orange.
Farming is wrapping up so delicious fresh veggies.
All in all, fall is one of the best times to be an Iowan.
