Anyone here ever use a storm kettle? Are they are versatile as advertised? How does their boiling speed compare with a jetboil?

Seems like a good alternative to an isobutane stove for people who don't want to carry fuel around.

I am thinking of getting one to keep in my boat as a one stop heat/boil/cook device. I have gotten stuck by tides a few times and spent unplanned nights in the wilderness so I keep a minimalist camping kit in there. Not a lotta space though.

they seem pretty big and heavy for how much they actually heat up. the 800ml bottle is about as big as a 1.5l bottle and significantly heavier. but on a boat that shouldn't be that big of a deal.

they seem cool. i have never used one though.

It's a cool gadget and if I had money to burn, I'd buy one but I don't really have a use for it.

I'd expect a Jetboil or similar propane / butane camping stove to boil water faster, as they're more efficient and put out more BTUs but on the other hand, the Storm / Kelly / Ghillie kettles use natural fuel, which can be found anywhere.

They are nice, but bulky and heavy, so saving weight is definitly not one of their advantages.

Also, they are only good for heating water, nothing else, if you want to cook/simmer something, they are not ideal.

Take a look at a honey stove or firebox stove. Both pack totally flat and are great little wood burners. Use with a billy pot.

But then again, I think the storm kettles are also pretty good, there's extras to go with them as well and you can always just pull to shore, make a nice cup of tea with driftwood and warm up. Pretty comfy like. :3

at 1st i thought they were a bit of a hipster hipster item for innawoods brews until a photgtraphy buddy of mine brought his out one night- he was able to brew up bits of fluff from his pockets and burning dry seaweed.
I bought mine not long after this.

Whilst they are a bit bulky I can't say they are that heavy, they do well on pretty much any combustible material, and you can even boil them with an alcohol stove

downside is that you cant cook on em dry or you wreck em, and you can't use em as a long term water carrier or the pop rivets corrode.

If I'm honest they are pretty gimmicky but are a lot of fun too. deffo more car camping of afternoon on the beach fishing kinda thing than a 3 day hike cooking solution

I don't have any connection to Devin or Leo or their Kickstarter fiasco ... bought my kettle from Sparkmade I think. If you don't want to support them, mKettle makes a copy, but it's a bunch heavier. Even though I don't like what Devin and Leo did to their initial supporters, I don't like supporting people who copy someone elses ideas either.

Only real problem is during fire season. I talked to a friend who's a local USFS head ranger and he said that, although it is classified as a solid-fuel stove, it cannot be used during extreme fire danger times. Whenever you can't build a campfire, you can't use one of these. Sparks from the burning wood or something like that. He also told me that, where campfires are prohibited, such as high mountain lakes where wood is scarce, the only way you can use one is if you bring your own fuel. Otherwise, I have one and have used it a few times, but it is bulky for the amount of water one can boil, and like all things that burn wood, it can be kind of messy. But a good, simple alternative to things that use refined fuels. Satisfying as a fuel-it-for-free concept.
