Hey /out/, what do you guys think of this? I was in Maplin yesterday and saw the yellowstones kit so I had a sconce online today and spotted this. Has anyone used one? Are they any good?

pretty shitty.

-huge, heavy, difficult to carry
-charges very slowly, maybe 1/4 the speed of a typical 1500mA charger from experience (rather than measurement with amp meter)
-annoying to feed if you're cooking/heating anything on top, since fuel also go in the top
-you'll have to stop every now and then to empty the ashes
-it gets gross in a hurry if you cook over it. oil and any splatter will work its way into all the vents and under the mesh

DO NOT BUY. get a battery bank for shorter trips, resupply with fresh batteries, or a solar panel if weather is great and you truly can't resupply.

I think it's a cool gadget and I wouldn't mind having one but I can't really justify spending the money, as I wouldn't use it except for goofing around.

Used it on a weeklong trek this spring.
I had one powerbank with me as it was, I wish I had just bought more powerbanks. The biolite is loud and takes forever to charge.

The technology definitely makes more sense at a larger scale. If I had a cabin I'd contemplate a home stove model since I live in the PNW and large scale solar can be.....unreliable..at times.

I've ran mine for a couple hours and never had to empty the ashes. maybe a half inch at the bottom when It was all done.

I dont charge anything with it, it's just great to cook on.

a mate of mine had one last summer, it took nearly 5 hours of feeding it near damn waist high pile finger sized fuel. because it's fan assisted it eats the stuff like a fat kid on a bag of skittles

he sold it a week later to some other foolish rube and chucked £30 at an Anker pack from Amazon,.... now all of us have done the same. Over the years a few of us have dabbled with various solar Solar chargers too, but these are eually as shit- you're realistically talking a few days to fully charge the battery back, which will give you maybe one full charge to a modern smarphone ect

tl:dr fad chargers can't compete- buy an Anker pack

Its unfortunate but at this point in time its easier to just haul extra batteries or power banks with you instead of recharging gear.

Maybe one day someone will rethink the biolite stove and make it actually work good.

apparently the military complex is experimenting with backpacks that use your inertia to flex springs to charge batteries to power the devices soldiers use on them like NVGs and satcoms or GPS.

they say eventually its something you will see at an outfitter.
