I have one more camping trip in October, which I'm expecting to be cold.

Absolutely get a winter bag if you're in Canada.

I lived in North Dakota and live in Wisconsin now. I'm very familiar with the cold.
Is start browsing for good deals on bags now and get one if you see something affordable.
If you really want to, you can wait till about a week before to see if it might be freakishly warm but I wouldn't take the risk.
I have a 32F bag that works well to 40F but that is with a 5 R-value pad, a hat and "long Johns" (the /out/ kind that works great but costs way to much money).

Below 40F I start to get uncomfortably chilly. I will wake up in the middle of the night to tighten my bag and reposition my body to get the parts of my body that are cold, warm again. Then wake up shortly after to do it again.

The risk you take when you go /out/ is rewarding when it is relevant to your travels or the terrain you wish to conquer. Risking whether or not your gear is suitable, however, is stupid and infuriating.

When I was in my teens I went with shine friends /out/ in Feb. in WI. We each built or own shelters during the day and slept in them at night. One of my friends nearly froze to death when he made some absent minded mistakes (a result of trying to do to much "fancy" sit with his shelter in to little time). Because of a snow storm that came, he wisely chose to stay in his cold as fuck shelter. If it wasn't for what he had considered an "overkill" sleeping bag he would of had to risk finding his way through a blizzard to one of our shelters that were camouflaged in the snow.

Don't know about liners but I've got an overbag (an older model of the MEC Penguin) for my summer bag that adds a bit warmth for early fall nights (supposedly adds 10C to the bag's rating). If it's just a weekend trip that might work, but if it's for longer or if you plan on doing this regularly a winter bag is a good investment.

October in Ontario is tricky, it could be summery but I've also camped in the snow on Thanksgiving weekend.

On the whole liner aspect... I have a silk liner, should I be using it inside my winter bag? Does it actually serve a purpose in the whole "vapour barrier" story? I only just found out it's a thing to have one in your sleeping bag and had just bought the liner for high heat summer hiking.

I've never used one but on long trips ice thought about how they could be useful.
After a few days of sweating and no shower, I've felt my sleeping bag get greasy.

However, Ive done well without one. Seems more like a quality of life item and the combination of taking up more space and being a little costly im going to pass.

Yeah I remember I was all bundled up watching the Perseids in the penguin (roomier than the mummy bag, rated 15C on its own) and a fleece hoodie.

I'm kind of thinking of a barrel bag with hood, if I can find a nice one. Between wide shoulders and middle aged spread and a tendency to sprawl in bed I find mummy bags restricting and harder to sleep in. Will I freeze to death or is it just more bulky?

If this in fact now the fall/winter sleeping bag thread, I have a question about a bag I've been looking at. It's heavy as fuck, but one of the only two person bags (girlfriend's request) I've found that wasn't $400+ (though those I would have no question about quality). Basically, would we be warm enough in this bag in October, in WA, about 1700 elevation, thermarest pads ~5rvalue, possibly another open cell pad on top ~6rvalue.

Back when I was using my tent (Cabela's Alaskan Guide 6-man) for seer hunting here in Michigan, I'd safety pin my old light-mid weight Boy Scout sleeping bag inside my heavy bag (which was on-top of a Thermarest pad, on a space blanket, on a rug).

While admittedly bulky, I was toasty warm despite temps getting well below freezing several times.

this is my current cold weather bag, and i also use the green foam usgi mat as well. keeps me warm, and i have a cheap army green wool blanket i can lay over it to help as well when its really cold.

i camp in a kelty tn2, so not a cold wearher tent by any means. im poor and been slowly upgrading my gear.

I carry a sol escape bivvy which can be a handy addition if things are getting too cold for comfort. At a minimum, always carry a space blanket you may have a wet night but you won't fucking die.

Why would you sleep in seperate shelters especially in winter. That's dumb. Make one large shelter, sleep togetger and go on shifts who will be tending the fire to stay somewhat warm.

I'm going camping the first week of October, I'm looking into buying a new sleeping bag to replace my eons old Coleman one.

Looking at weather data from the past few years Night temps in London Ontario hover around 8-10 degrees on those dates. Might be worth it to get a new bag, unless your old one is rated close enough to those temps

I'm aware that there is going to be a reason its so cheap. I just need something so i don't freeze for those days and until I can save up for some proper backpacking/camping stuff. So I think I'll probably go for it.

basically, any bag rated for below 30 F, get a liner(cheap is fine, self-made OK) and get a second liner. Now your sleeping bag can keep you alive and will not need to be cleaned for at least 2 weeks. Spend 1.00 on quarters to clean at a laundromat after those two weeks. Air dry/sun clean that sleeping bag.

But yeah, layer systems are more dependable, only real negatives about them are the increased complications(more zippers, buttons,etc) and BULK.

I just picked up two Nemo Mezzoloft bags and two Big Agnes insulated Q-core pads.

A super nice setup, the pads slip into a pocket on the back of the bags and the bags can zip together on either side.

Also have a down comforter for the top.

Super cushy!

Would like to add a couple liners just to keep the sweat and cum residues to a minimum.
