Where are you? Make sure you know the.laws and your rights when it comes to camping/setting traps etc. should be the first thing.

I'm in Georgia, in Atlanta, but my parents have a place in the mountains that's very rural, the population is only 15k. I'll look for some info on the laws online tonight.

Oh well when you are in the us you are pretty much good to go.
But if I were you setting up traps would be the smallest of my problems.
Start with the basics on how to set up a nice shelter and bring your own food on your first trips.

Wildlife and plant identification. Some are better than others, you'll probably be better off getting the most localized one you can.
Maybe some historic journals if that is your sort of thing to read around camp. They often have useful information in them.

It is nice to have a reference guide to work from in the field for a lot of things. I'd rather have a book on mushrooms and be able to know right from that book rather than depend on my shitty memory.

A lot of the stuff online is very good, I kind of like having a nice manual, too, though. There's one writer who's very notorious for outdoor survival, who also does classes, but I'm forgetting his name.

Also online information can be difficult to verify, with a book you can be mostly sure that it is mostly true.

If you are going to carry a kukri then use it to substitute for a hatchet, not a knife.
Get a 5 or 6" fixed knife for your main carry purposes, I recommend Buck, and a smaller folder like an Opinel or something similar with a pin lock instead of some fancy gadget. Good rule of thumb to go by with knives is if it looks like it belongs in CoD than it is shit.

Boiling water takes a long time. It is the best way by far but iodine gets the job done.
