Nice, new board.

So I've been looking into getting some good boots. I'm not hiking the AT or anything, but I want some good water proof hiking boots that are durable, do well in the snow, as well as not melt my feet if I wear them in the summer. I've been looking at some Danners. Thoughts?

Personally I prefer low-cut shoes, not boots as they rub against my legs causing blisters.

I have 3 pairs of Redwing work boots i use. I wear low cut thin socks in the summer with no problems. Boots are hit and miss. Dont buy them online. Try them on and walk in them. REI has a great selection of quality hiking boots. You might go to your local "work wear" store and have a look around as well.

Danners make really good boots, but some of the off brand whites are good too, i recommend getting Wildland boots because they are by far some of the best boots ever.

Are trail runners or other very light boots/shoes suitable for heavy loads, such as my fat ass?

I know traditional wisdom says that the longer the trip, heavier the load, and rougher the terrain (pick one or more) the more likely you'll be happy with a heavier boot.

Here's the rub: I recently bought a pair of sandals for the first time since I was a wee larva, and walking around with breezy dry, cool feet was revelatory. I didn't know this feeling was possible.

I can't fathom wearing effing Tevas (or something) on a ten mile hike, but perhaps something in a mesh trail runner?

Do you wear 'em? Do they offer enough support for long walks or heavy packs? How well do they breathe, really?

they're a bit stiff at first but after 10-15 miles they're mint.
I've gone through tons of boots and these are by far the best.. not as comfortable as the Oakley's or the Nike boots but they last alot longer and will protect your ankles better... also I prefer a stiffer boot.
The Oakley's have a wide base at the heel so its nearly impossible to roll your ankle but I'd go through 2-3 pairs through a deployment with them
imo cost wise these are the best boots you can buy.

Trailworker here. I've used Danners for an entire season and loved them. Very strong, good support and comfort, and extremely watertight and durable.

These boots are so good the first pair I got actually leaked after a month of heavy hiking. So I sent them back (great factory guarantee) and they sent me a new pair. The new pair has not leaked and I have been heavily using them for just under a year now. These are just such a good investment.

I've been using Lowa renegades for some years now and I love 'em. Flexible, but still sturdy, and waterproof, and light. I'm using gamaschen with them in case of snow.

Lundhags, sons. I'd recommend the park, scout, or forest. As basic and great as you can get, but they'll last a lifetime. Be prepared to pay though, they don't come cheap.
