Hey just ate my first crawdad and was wondering how do you guys like to cook em up? Also any tips for catching supper by the river?

Boiled with butter and salt, they'll turn red when they're cooked. Most crawdads you'll find while hiking are pathetically small so you'd have to catch quite a few to make a worthwhile meal out of them.

Past trying some out we caught in a creek when I was around twelve, I wouldn't really eat them unless I was really hungry and birds weren't available for some reason. I don't really see an alternative to boiling them.

I guess the best way would be buying a small crayfish trap. Guess they are pretty cheap and light. Or you could try your hand at making one yourself

Central missouri here. Everyone eats them here, hell even the Chinese buffet places always have a pan of fresh cooked crawfish.

Even here in MA a lot of Shiny Fu places have crawfish at the buffets, and us New Englanders are hardly a crawfish-engrained people. However, to say they're fresh cooked crawfish is a bit a of stretch methinks. I'm thinking frozen and steam thawed or something

Eh we actually have a couple farms nearby for them so some are actually fresh but I'm sure some are frozen shipped in as well. I actually have one of these

And use it at the creek all the time. A chicken leg for bait works great.

wow, not bad for three dolla! we have actually have lots of crawfish up here but only in the small fast-running brooks and streams. so you can't really catch them in bulk like you can in the bayou and the like. have chased them in the streams a few times as a kid but never ate one of them

Boil them in a pot or steam them. Add some spices to the water to flavored them up a bit. After they turn a nice red color rip em up and enjoy. Or dip in a lemon butter sauce. Seriously anything you do with shrimp/crab/lobster works on mud bugs as well.
