How much gear do you guys actually carry with you when you go /out/doors?

I'm a cheap fuck. I don't spend money on backpacks, hiking shoes, etc etc and I've never had a problem with it. I recognize that if you're camping you obviously need gear but what's up with the people I run into when I go hiking that have huge backpacks, knives, this and that for day hikes?
