I recently updated my wilderness survival kit. Swapped my regular maxpedition organizer for a fatty, replaced some items with new ones (bigger ferro rod).

The idea behind this, is a kit that I take with me whenever I go /out/, doesn't matter where, and for how long (if it's longer, then I'll obviously have extra stuff like tent/sleeping bag/etc.).

Got some extra space for a few more doodads. I know I want a good, small sharpening stone, and I need to replace the trash bag (used it up last time as, well, trash bag - doesn't do to leave a mess innawoods if you can help it).

Any suggestions?

Esee Izula II (I really wanted a proper fixed blade, even though I always carry two when I'm out anyway)
LMF Army ferro rod (thicker than the regular LMF scout)
Bic mini
Fire Tin (some de-makeup pads, and a tea light), also for making charcloth
Tinder Tin (additional tinder - Jutte cord, etc. waterproof container)
Some tin foil
Emergency blanket
8 fl. oz. stainless steel hip flask
ziplock bag
Approx 15 ft. paracord
Cotton bandana
Rite in the Rain notebook + pen.

Not pictured:
1L Nalgene bottle (technically not part of the kit)

Missing:
sharpening stone (need to find a good one)
Pencil/sharpie
trash bag (haven't replaced after using)

I would ditch the flask and the blanket. Neither serve much of a purpose, you are also brining a nalgene and as the sole piece of first aid gear that blanket will serve no purpose.

I know conventional wisdom is 2 pieces of fire making gear, but when I go somewhere where there is no realistic possibility of my being stuck for multiple weeks I take just a bic.

If this were mine I'd add some topical antibiotic and a gauze pad with tape. Get a knife that holds a better edge so I didn't expect to need the sharpening stone. Oh and a couple of unlubricated condoms.

As for the blanket, that's something I always carry - call me paranoid, but as a "just in case someone gets cold" item, I have one in my extended edc pack as well. Plus, it's not just "first aid" - works quite well as an extra layer of insulation for the shelter, or as a screen to reflect heat from the campfire.

Problem with nalgene is that you can't really boil in it.

in regular use, you hardly notice it. I use a lansky diam/cer rods to sharpen, and rlmax takes a nice edge. Same as s35vn - can't complain about either, but I can get a similar edge on d2 - neither steel is magical - i've never had a problem with them, so i'm happy enough.

can't say for certain - probably around $140-150.

Maxpedition fatty is 30 bucks, esee izula 2 is around 80, the rest were peanuts by comparison.

Switch out a pencil for the pen; the pen ink will freeze in cold weather, and can dry out. You can sharpened the pencil with your knife, and if you need additional dry wood shavings to start a fire, you can get them from the pencil.

OP here - i'd throw in a few water purification tabs and general first aid stuff. Nothing this side of a full on dressing, but there's still room here. Could probably fit a filter straw in if I moved some stuff around.

The 2 main issues with most such kits are knife and container. I always carry a knife or two with me. If I'm out in the woods, then it's always two, both fixed blades. The reason I want another knife in there is because I want this to be a self-contained kit. Same with the flask - I will USUALLY have my nalgene with me, but just in case, I want a proper container in the kit as well.

unlubricated condoms also work (iirc, the regulations say 1 gallon before bursting).

Where is your compass? With a compass you may be able to walk out using none of the other stuff. I'm not an expert, but to me not having a compass is just silly.

Space blankets are fragile and tear so easily that you're better off with two big trashbags instead, IMO.

Other than that your kit looks good. Consider adding some fishing gear and replacing the flask with something more suitable for boiling water. You know the bottom can start leaking / come off once heated.

That's not proper. It shouldn't be difficult to find an aluminium (or s.steel) container and drill some holes near the edge for metal wire so that it can be hanged over fire.

id add fishing line and some hooks. food is really the only thing your missing from this kit, and fish are easy to catch if you can find some worms or something for bait.

if not fishing line makes good cord for snare traps

also add a pen and paper to write shit down, and perhaps some sort of wildlife guide on edible plants and whatnot

first 3 days all you need is limit exposure and manage your bodyheat and stay hydrated as much as possible.
after that fishhooks and fishing will be the least of your problems.

food should never be a primary concern for kits this size and role, but sure enough a good long line can be useful for many things and a couple of hooks is not going to weight anything noticeable.

Do not ditch the blanket! I had a zipper malfunction on my sleeping bag one night on top of a mountain and that saver my bacon. High winds, upper 20 degrees, fire was out. Tried to tough it out but I lost all my warm dead air. A friend had a fleece liner he wasn't using and it made a world of difference. After that night I keep a emergency blanket in all my bags.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

What insulation? All the reflective properties are useless in any real dire situation. A space blanket works only if you wrap it around you and if you do that long enough, your clotches get wet.

Plastic is great for blocking wind and rain but if you wrap yourself in it like most people probably do in a bad situation, it only accelerates your demise.

I mentioned windbreak. A space blanket is a good windbreak. However it doesn't insulate at all and using it as a fire reflector is a gimmick. If you have a good fire, why not marshmallows?

The space blanket is not the answer to everything.

actually it is a life saver it's called a rescue blanket for a reason, not a convenience item, when you are hypothermic and start to shut down you won't sweat that is when you use the blanket on your skin to save your fucking life. other than that it's heat reflecting and wind-breaking properties can save your life but you got to make sure it doesn't touches you there is air inside like a small tent around your body and some air circulation so that sweat doesn't build up.

my only problem with it, is keeping stuff like this in your car is moronic, your car can carry weight for you and doesn't even notice and there are tons of stuff that would be of use, without a car however this kit is just the right size, for a bike trip or on foot hiking. so if you have a car make a larger bag, with some water and food in it and maybe a bigger tool and throw this kit inside, when you go out without your car take only this.

Probibly the best and most accurate discription. "Survival blanket" is a little general.

Just for shits and giggles, take that blanket out of the package and try to use it. You'll realize those things are absolute garbage and not even worth carrying. Get one of those SOL bivys if you want a real survival blanket

if there's any wind it doesn't warm you at all. if its calm and you're still getting hypothermic i don't think a space blanket can save you.

you seem to think it doesn't traps air in a fabric so it's useless, but in fact it does trap air between you and it. even if freezing cold it will reflect infra radiation from your body and air is a good enough insulation.

if you find shelter from 95% of the wind but still have some air movement in your sheltered spot this will be very useful to stop even that.

i put it between blankets when real cold and i lose too much heat to the outside. my tent was not up to the conditions and it got friggin cold i had to make a smaller airspace to warm up. lucky i had this with me.

only downside is the fucking noise it makes somewhat mitigated if you put it between layers of blankets. so i'm not tempted to use one unless i really have to.

it's also a shelter from the sun and good for signaling, hell maybe you can make a distiller with it.

Space blankets are meant for emergencies not long term survival. The most common application i see on /out/ is filling holes/stuck zippers in a sleeping bag in very cold condition.
Some other uses include a rain fly like you said, signaling device, water collection

I think a space blanket is a great addition to any survival kit, especially given its weight, size, and mulitple uses. I carry 3 in my long term survival kit. I've never been a fan of the Altoids survival kits, they just seem too small to be practical. I'd get something a little bigger like a Condor Sidekick pouch as seen in my photo. It came with 2 6inch MOLLE Straps and Im sure it wouldn't be hard to rig up a shoulder strap if you wanted to. Unless your going for something that fits in your pocket, im just not crazy about the Altoids tin.

Also check youtube - there are reviews for every one - to get a rough idea of what you will be able to fit inside.
