Hey, /out/
Why don't you just build a natural shelter when you camp?
>waterproof
>insulated
>soundproof
>free
>you don't have to carry it
Regular tents are just one of those. The only reason I can see bringing a tent would be if the environment was barren or had insects and creepy crawlies everywhere.
So why not build a shelter every else and not bother carrying the unnecessary weight?

I can set my tent up in under 5 minutes even in the dark. After a 15 mile hike I don't really feel like ambling about all over the mountainside for 3+ looking for materials and constructing a shelter.

Also, if everyone who went /out/ built natural shelters then there wouldn't be any small trees or limbs left in moderate to high use camping areas. It's a good skill to learn but completely impractical in practice if you're only going to be staying at that campsite for 1-3 nights.

The one on your pic is not waterproof and rain will fall on you. It is not insulated at all. It is not soundproof either. Since you had to work for it, and used resources with a commercial value (wood) it is not free. You have to carry the tools.

It's just one form of natural shelter. This one is under lots of trees giving extra shelter from weather, and the sleeping area is covered. Use dead wood and roots for cord and you're set. All free.

A single person tent weights about 2 pounds. If you're packing a good deal of survival stuff 2 pounds is nothing added to it. If you're not carrying too much then you can add 2 pounds as well. If you're in a group and need a bigger tent then there is a better way of distributing weight.
It's way easier to assemble than a wood shelter and you still need to carry wood around in the latter case, which won't work in an emergency, say, if it's raining like bitches and you're in the middle of the woods.

Make a natural shelter if you need to or want to gain experience, not because you can go into someone else's house and tear up their stuff.

Something for you guys to consider - if you or a neighbor has a tree being removed ask if you can take some of it and use that to practice building natural shelters. I had a tree growing too close to my house, once it made contact with one of the gutters I had it removed and asked that they left everything rather than haul it away. I got to try building several shelters and see what I was actually able to make work. I also got to practice some firecraft. Two of my neighbors saw what I was doing and they joined in as well, so invite your /out/ buddies to participate.

Not sure why it rotated but I built a simple roof over the hole left by a fallen tree, so was underground. I added more dead leaves and improved the roof on the 2nd day. It was made entirely from deadfall/leaf litter except from 2 leafy branches, so not terrible on the woods

My tent only weighs 1lb and I can set it up in under 3 minutes. I have been through some serious rain in it without water getting in. I think I'll take the tent bro, thanks for another useless thread.

I love building shelters and I have several through out the woods in the areas that I frequent. I also have a a light weight eureka tent that I use, and a tarp. I like to mix it up. But the main thing about bushcraft and building shelters is to disconnect for depending on gear, which to me is a great thing incase you get caught out and you don't have anything.
Also some shelters can take a lot of time and energy to make.

Shelters are more fun though and you can make them bigger and even have fires and shit in them.

The coolest one I ever made was on an army survival course and we found a collapsed shack with heaps of corrugated iron. Over about a week we built up our shelter every night and did things like make a chimney for a central fire that we slept around, put ferns on the ground for insulation, used the corrugated iron that was too small for the roof as a heat deflector for the fire. I would call it cozy, but it was pretty fucking cold at night.

Cold environments any time of the year except winter have bugs as bad as anywhere else.

I live in Northern MN, and the bugs are almost as bad as they were when I was stationed in Panama. The only place I've ever lived that didn't have a ton of biting insects was Colorado, and that was in the mountains.
