I've figured out everything BUT shoes:

>Are snow shoes like in pic related the only solution for walking in deep snow
>is there any other less bulky garments that could function for when the snow isn't so deep or soft (ie snow packed and compacted by the snowmobiles)

Get some old tennis rackets. Some string and you got a leasy to carry set of snow shows. Unless you're big. Then you might need something with more surface area.

really any snow shoe is gonna be bulky but modern snow shoes are much smaller and lighter then those old wooden ones

Canadian tire sells some for less then $100. no idea how good they are but i'd start with something cheap then if you decide to keep doing it you could always upgrade later on

where exactly do you live? if we're talking like 2ft or more the snow shoes would help but any less then that it's kinda pointless since the effort of using the shoes will be equal if not more effort then walking through the snow. also your dog will slow you down in deep snow anyway

South-western Ontario, in the country side. We do get a lot of snow, but it tends to come in big storms then a few weeks where a few inches might fall through the week, then another big storm, etc...

This is true. Just a guess here but if I were to just walk through the compacted snow, I'd have to spend a decent amount of waterproof/snowproof boots right?

We def do have a lot more than 2ft of snow for most of the year. Like I said tho, sometimes people snowmobile on that trail and make the snow compacted and hard

yeah lake effect snow is a bitch. I'm near London and honestly the number i've times i've thought snow shoes would be nice is so few i never even bothered looking into them. the last 2 winters have been abnormal and a real pain in the ass but unless you planning on some long walks(who the fuck wants to do that at -30?) i wouldn't even bother

it doesn't hurt but honestly as long as you prevent snow from getting in it's not an issue. i'm outside a lot so i have some good expensive winter boots but a lot of people will just put their pant legs over the boots and sometimes throw on an elastic. some cheap walmart boots with good wool socks work just fine. also most snow pants have elastics on the ends of the legs which also works very well

Your feet can get cold if the snow is melting. In cold snow, it's hard to get wet even in non-goretex shoes. But gaiters are useful.

I snowshoe with my full leather meindls and low gaiter or alpinism 3 layer pants, and I was fine.

you can still get wet simply from sweat which is mostly an issue with feet. many modern winter boots have tiny drain holes in the soles which helps. the biggest thing you can do is wear wool socks

Skis save you a ton of energy. Only reason to use snow shoes is for use in dense forests.
