Safety isn't going to hurt, but they're hot and bulky and snag on brush and generally a nuisance.
I am usually using saws that I can out-muscle. If it is anything larger than a 290, I am careful not to pinch the bar, tap the tip into anything, and I keep my body out of the plane that the bar occupies.
Once you basically eliminate kickback, every other situation that you could be cut is within your control. Sharp chains move easily through the wood; if you're using both hands and not pushing your bodyweight into it, the odds of actually hitting your leg on accident are virtually nil.
Be safe; read the wood well and only swing the saw as fast as you can. You'll be fine.
