Can we get a bowfishing thread going? I haven't seen one in awhile. Post pics/share stories from this year.

Also if you have any ethnical problems with bowfishing, please just ignore the thread and move on, you aren't going to change anyone's mind. It seems like these always turn into shitfests.

but if you are bowfishing, how do you abide by bag limits? and slot limits? do you instantly know the fish you are targeting is within slot size? do you continue bow fishing when you hit your bag limit?

Where I am the only species nearby that can be harvested by bow are carp and gar, and neither of those have bag limits. That being said, it's always important to identify what you're shooting at. In an ideal world people wouldn't shoot at something if they couldn't 100% identify it, but I don't think many people adhere to that.

Generally the only fish you can take by means other than hook and line are "rough" fish (carp, gar, dogfish) or invasives. You can usually find a list of acceptable fish to shoot for your state pretty easily.

Nice shot. It's been years since I've been bowfishing and none of my fish were lucky enough to be killed so quickly when I used to go. Do you use the fish for anything. We'd chop them up and fertilize the garden with them. Can't imagine ever eating gar though apparently some people do like carp.

Small carp we cube and fry, large ones we hack up and use as fertilizer. I've heard gar are actually really good but I have yet to try one. Haven't shot one in two years.

Also what do if bowfishing in muddy water? It's mainly what I got around me.

I couldn't tell you on baiting but that's something that varies by state anyway. I wouldn't bowfish from a kayak, no matter how stable. I know two guys who do it from a full sized canoe and they say even that is shaky. I shoot almost exclusively from shore, and most of the water I shoot at is muddy. For carp you just wait to see the shadow under the water or for a back to pop out. Gar rise up to the surface every couple minutes for some reason. Both will sun themselves in shadow water on sunny days.

This can be a Q&A thread if everyone would like. I'll answer questions to the best of my ability.

Best setup I've had was when I lived near a swampy area with a pipeline crossing the water. While you could stand on one of the support columns that occurred frequently, the diameter of the pipe was large enough that it was stable to shoot from too. There were no 'Keep off the pipeline' signs and no physical barriers from getting on it so we never worried about getting in trouble. Too bad I've since moved.

Never used a sling bow. The anon above described a good place. Most of my best successes have been at spillways, outlets, floodwater, and dams. Basically anywhere the fish can get trapped because they'll tend to pile up as close to the exit as they can even if they can't get out.
