/out/, my baby is able to hold her head up now so I'm looking to get back to going outdoors.

Can you guys recommend a good baby hiking carrier? Preferably one that has a head shield for shade. It's too damn hot in So Cal right now.

I just use a soft structure carrier. lighter and more compact. I've got a couple lillebaby airflows and an all seasons, they do have a down side of direct contact between you and the kid which can build up a lot of heat. My wife is really into woven/wrap carriers which work rather well though they can lack stability/security as they flex (they're just fabric after all.) most of these can be done for a little less than a "hiking" carrier and are less obtrusive for urban use. I do recommend lillebaby, I find them more comfortable than others i've tried but all carriers fit different. try before you buy if at all possible. caution, some are stupid expensive, but don't let that scare you. affordable companies exist.

Former packfitter here, my best seller was always the Osprey Poco line. It comes in three models, Poco, Poco Plus and Poco Premium. The Poco base model doesn't come with the sun shade, but you can add it on later for $25. The Premium has the most storage space and a zip-off daypack.

The reason I preferred these over the Deuter or Kelty carriers is primarily because of two things.

1. Re-sizing the harness is way quicker and easier than either the Deuter or Kelty.

2. The harness for the baby buckles over the shoulders, unlike the Deuter which buckles down the front like a racing harness. Way easier to get a squirmy kid in and out of the Osprey.

Also it's an Osprey, so iron-clad lifetime warranty. Which means a decent resale value after your kids have outgrown it.

i started carrying my kid around in it when he was 4 months old, he's now 8 months, absolutely loves it. he sits high enough he can see over my shoulders, unlike some packs where the kid spends the whole time staring at your back. we've gone on 8+ mile hikes, 3rd class scrambling, all over the sierra, never a complaint from him.

plus is worth the extra storage, but premium's daypack is a waste imo.
