I got one when in Afghanistan and it was pretty useful. Haven't worn it much since because hipsters ruined them for the most part.

I don't recommend wearing one if your just walking around town. If you're innawoods or something then by all means.

wash that thing like a dozen times. Whoever fabricates them in China uses way too much coloring.
I washed mine (black and sand) like a dozen times because the chemical stench wouldn't go out and each time the water turned darkbrown from all the color that washed out.
Imagine your face getting all brown if you sweat into an unwashed one.

Seen please ty of blokes wearing them and I tried one for a short exercise but in the temps I was in (lowest was -2° Celcius, I found no difference between that and the much smaller more compact 'headsock' that stayed around my neck. I found it was the same since they both kept the wind off.
In colder weather, it might make more difference but for me, the much smaller option was equal to it.

I have one that I wear when I'm out on my motorcycle and wearing an open face helmet, but I would not wear it day to day as it makes you look to much like a hipster, I prefer a normal scarf or a neck tube for day to day stuff.

It's a real shame that the hipster cunts have ruined what is actually a very versatile garment, it can be used as a scarf, a balclava, a support for sprained limbs, a large bandage, a table cloth, and if you know how to tie it and fold it right a shopping bag too.

Since I'm in California, I only wear a simple bandana around my neck. If I know it's going to get hot during the day I soak the bandana in water and leave it in the freezer overnight. It keeps me cool for the entirety of the hike and protects my neck from the Sun. That and a baseball cap and it's the only thing I need. If the Sun becomes too much I fold over a corner of the bandana and stuff it into the top of my baseball cap so that the rest of it hangs around the side of my face and my neck.

I do own a green and black shemaq that's made out of lambs wool (the local gun store here imports the real deal). But I use it for hunting, it goes well with my camo gear and wearing it snackbar style both keeps the bugs out of my face and ears, and shields my eyes from the Sun without the big profile of a baseball cap's visor.

I wear the black, extra long version sometimes and it works just fine in mild weather. Too thin to use on its own when it gets really cold. The tie dye versions look awful IMO but to each his own.

I think anyone who was actually deployed there gets a total pass. Like anon upthread put it, form beats function.

I'd feel dumb as a non-veteran wearing one, though, because I feel like it would make me look like a poser. If they catch on and become widespread enough, then that'll change.
