Couple of tips that have helped me:
>Fluorocarbon line. For everything but topwater. The sensitivity difference is just amazing. And 6lb fluoro can still cast as well as 8 lb mono.
>Replace hardbait factory treble hooks with aftermarket hooks by Mustad, Gamakatsu, or Owner. You will hook and land way more fish.
>Get the Navionics boating app. It has depth charts for just about every lake, some detailed to the foot. Completely changed fishing for me.
>Where I fish, deeper water always holds bigger fish, pretty much regardless of species. They are just harder to locate.
