Hey guys. I'm looking into getting an /out/ vehicle. Currently driving a rwd pathfinder but saving up for old toyota 4x4 pickup.

Is 4x4 pretty much a necessity for going /out/?

I feel like you could still go most places with a 2wd car, but having a 4x4 could take you everywhere. What do you guys think?

I have one. It does not.

For 2wd a fwd will take you more places than a rwd unless its a rear engined rwd.

Laws of physics still apply; 4x4 just means all four wheels spin. It can be handy in loose-traction situations.

Gearing and transmission ratio's also a thing. Motor has to be able to produce usable torque/hp and get it to the ground in a manner that's controllable.

Best thing you can do, regardless of the number of driven axles, is put good tires on it.

Only two spin if it doesn't have a diff locker.

It honestly depends on what kind of outdoor activities you do. Get one if you often run into situations where you wish you had a more offroad capable vehicle.

Your Pathfinder can probably go 90% of the places a 4x4 can.

That being said, I like the low gearing offered by a transfer case for going up technical stuff. Speed tends to break shit. Slow as possible and fast as necessary is what they say.

4x4 is necessary for any serious off roading. It comes in handy when it's wet, steep, or snowy.

An old 4x4 Yota will be fine. A buddy had one, was an awesome little truck. Be careful of rust, and inspect it well before you buy.

If you really want a 4x4, look for late 80s and early 90s jeeps. They have square headlights and aren't as popular as newer, or older jeeps. They can be had cheap. They are crude to say the least, but a lot of fun for the $.

Absolute best thing to increase a 2wd's capability is a differential locker (constant power to BOTH rear wheels) Bigger tires and eight in the rear also help a bit. Either way, it wont ever be as good as a 4x4, but it goes a long way with what you've already got. Pic related, my 02' Ranger with a Lockrite locker and 27" all terrains.

Very good advice here, OP. Personally, I own a '13 Rubicon (unlimited, standard trans). I bought it to get me to /out spots and my previous vehicle (Xterra) wasn't cutting it. It's a good daily driver for my family and I but also gets me through East Texas mud, Gulf Coast beach sand and rocky mountain trails without worry. An old 4x4 Toyota (small) truck with manual lockers will do everything my Rubicon will do (and probably more). Throw a small shovel, come-along, and a couple of 12K+ tow straps in the back and you'll be fine.
