>>604599Threads about this guy crop up a lot and it's clear most people on this board finds that he was retarded.
I think he was brave, although misguided. He wanted to live a certain way and then, he just tried it. Most kids would have gone home after the first night, I know because I've hitchhiked and I've let kids doing it for the first time tag along and 90% of them turn back before nightfall. He managed to do it for a few months before he died, which showed he at least had the tenacity and attitude for it. But, at the same time, he was super arrogant and got his ass kicked by nature due to his ignorance.
It's pretty sad, if he had more patience he may be alive right now. I honestly wonder what was the driving force behind going all the way to Alaska. People find him fascinating because kids really don't just go into the wilderness and give up on life(society) like that willy nilly. They say they want to but, they never do because, if they did, there'd be more news articles and stories and McCandless would just be another one of those people.
I can see how it's valid for someone to find this guy intriguing or find his attitude inspiring/refreshing. Things like this aren't one-dimensional, either. Don't let it make you mad, though. Living life getting pissed off about someone who died in 1992 is silly.
