Hey /out/, I came here because I'd rather hear advice from actual people instead of some wikipedia page.

I'm 17 years old, and I'll just get to the bottom line : I'm going to leave society and live out my days (maybe I'll come back if I change my mind after a few years) in the forests of the Upper Penninsula in Michigan.

I need survival tips, anything that I need to know to surive, and to make it "easier". Anything to foraging, hunting, trapping, building shelter. Anything. I don't want to go out their unprepared, and I want information from people who know what they're talking about.

I'm not going to go unprepared. Please /out/, anything would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any experience in the wilderness, OP? Camping, backpacking, hunting anything of the sort? With no prior experience you should not go out alone because that will not end well. There are lots of books and websites all about this kind of stuff, look into it of you're serious but you should really consider if this is something that is feasible and whether or not this is a good idea

I've been thinking about doing the same as you OP but in a different area of the world. Have you considered a wall tent with a stove for shelter? It'd be portable and a very good shelter for living in. If you ever wanted to switch locations just tear it down, load up your canoe and head out.

First off, you wont make it alone you will die of exposure or hunger.
Second, you dont want to just survive, you want to live, that means preparing a place that you can call home. An actual structure, thus, tips on survival will be near enough useless as you're not gonna be starting fire from your bare hands and building loads of temporary A frame shelters. if you're gonna do it, build it up over time while you're at home so you can just move in some day. No need to 'rough it' or make it overly hard for yourself.
Third, you're 17, theres no chance at all you've exerienced enough of life to decide that you want out. If you hate your society that much (assuming you're not some edge lord) then try moving tom a different culture. University in the UK or Europe would be a great option.
Fourth. once you realize that living in the US, despite many flaws, actually puts you in one of the most fortunate postions on this planet, again, something you wont realize untill you grow older and see the world for what it really is.

TL;DR You'll die, Get some life experience, Eventually you'll learn to appreciate the society you harbor such apparent hate for.

That said. Get to a library. Read about woodcraft, foraging and survival.
Learn what plants can be eaten.
How to hunt, and dress game.
Try to find someone who actually knows their stuff, and learn from them.
Go hunting a few times to get some practice.

Get to one of the far flung communities.
Living on the edge of civilization my be enough of a change.
And if it's not, then you'll find people with knowledge that you can use.

Also no you don't need to trade at fucking all if you know how to make stuff from the woods, and there's always native tribes to trade with if you REALLY needed shit like is you brought a gun and ran out of ammo you could trade some furs or shit for it, no idea if that's how it works with America but most natives in Canada are pretty hospitable, some reserves can be a nightmare from hell tho.

That being said, OP should get out of his "fuck society" mentality. Instead of doing what McFagless did, how about taking a backpacking trip around the world for some time? Maybe you will realize that you are not so special after all. Even better, you may even learn to appreciate your life.

OP i love your "idea" and have always wanted to do the same but. bottom line it can't be done without significant money/resources to back you up (as in resupply with essential provisions on a regular basis).
It takes a small tribe helping each other with all the different necessary tasks to be able to survive in the wild. survivor shows on tv are staged and and backed up by 100s of support crew people and vehicles.
maybe you should consider joining the military or some kind of youth corps vocational/labour job training camp.
there are other ways and means of satisfying your thirst for the outdoors

To everyone saying the kid's going to die because he's 17, I spent my first two-month camping trip alone in Montana when I was the same age, and though I made a couple of mistakes I was just fine. That being said, I grew up hiking and camping 150 days out of the year. The kid probably isn't that smart because he's talking about "surviving" as though he wants to prove something, and that's not really the best reason to go out into the woods.

I'm just saying that because you were an idiot who would die innawoods at 17 doesn't mean everyone that age is.

If OP is evading his ban and lurking, my advice is don't, especially in northern Michigan, where you could easily die in winter. If you're really set on this, you should head to the western side of the country and practice supporting yourself somewhere that has plenty of fish, birds, rabbits and such and mild winters. Arizona or New Mexico, for example, just stay away from reservations if you're white. Hitchhike over, it's easy when you're young. After you get an idea of how resource management works, how food preservation works, get caught in a few shitty situations and get stumbled upon by people you should start to get an idea of what you need to be doing and then consider going north, where I'd still advise against Michigan because the winters there really are awful, you'd just be sitting around occasionally eating some preserved food.
