So, I have gotten my ssi open water diver licence yesterday. Any other divers here?

What organisation do you prefer? SSI, PADI, other?
What specialties would you advice? Which are worthless?
Any part of gear that would be best to buy first?
What is your most amazing/scary underwater experience?

Further info: I live and have dived in the Netherlands. Murky, cold water. I survived here. I will survive anywhere. Ok, max depth ever 9.9m (about 30 feet in freedomunits), so still quite the noob in the realms of Neptune.

SSI has some really cool specialties. Stress and Rescue is fucking insane but well worth it. Only try if you are a strong swimmer and not a pussy.
Other than that take your pick. They have basic specialties like river diving, shark diving and a waves and currents class. On the cooler and practical end of the spectrum a shipwrecks class, night diving/limited vis and navigation are really great to take. Also nitro/mied air, dry suit and deep divig courses are things to look into.
Definitely spend the cash to get some of your own, decent equipment and get maybe 50 dives on it so you really get a feel for your gear and get a feel for being underwater and breathing.

I planned on getting PADI certified, but I am too fat and can't get anyone to sign off on my medical certs. Fat cells absorb too much nitrogen, greatly increasing your odds of contracting the bends at much shallower depths.

ssi is more common in the states. i have been certified by both at different times. as for courses, fuck cave diving that shit is scary. nitrox would be good to know. but most of the stuff >>605670 lists i don't know why you would need a course. i've gone night diving and shark diving and river diving and diving in currents that drift you with just my basic open water. and i have dove over wrecks, but you aren't supposed to go in them unless you have a cave diving cert.

but i never did it to be technical. i just like looking at fish and feeling weightless.

I agree that the course part is far from the most important, more that diving at night/near wrecks would be awesome. I already visited two public transport busses at about 7m depth. Was nice, I didn't dare to go in yet. I must say the ability to just float around and do nothing for it whilst amazing yourself about live underwater is very awesome. Do you have any nice underwater stories?

There is one underwater lab, not even funded by the government anymore but some rando Florida college. The whole thing is the size of just one of those ISS modules.

It's 2015 and somebody who wants to go live underwater has zero options for doing that. What the hell.

one dive off Florida I found a good sized Nurse shark laying on the bottom. I knew they didn't have teeth so I petted it (I was 15 and retarded) so no big deal. I get back to the surface and the dive master asks if I saw anything cool so I told him about the Nurse shark petting. he told me that about 2 years previously another did that and the shark bit him and didn't let go so they had to take him and the shark to the ER and cut the sharks jaws out to get him free. no teeth doesn't mean they don't bite. i felt bad :(

I was thinking about buying a mask first, since that would be the cheapest option for the largest profit. Thoughts? For regulator, it will have to fit on the tank, although any self respecting diving school will have adapters i guess. Suit would be nice to have one though, if it doesn't fit well it really is a pain in the arse.

Sort of related question:

Is a wet suit a smart choice of clothing for a tactical autumn swamp mission? Needs to be light, agile, and stay warm while wet.

No diving, just going waist deep and maybe falling over into the swamp a few times.

a wetsuit is for staying warmer while completely submerged. if you aren't peeing in your wetsuit you are doing it wrong.

getting wet on tactical missions leaves you 2 choices. 1 is gear up with heavy shit like waders. 2 is to cross the fucking swamp trying to keep your boots and gun dry and tough it the fuck out nancy.

when i was in the military we didn't bring waders.

How is it that someone with only 4 courses and a very limited number of dives can be considered a "master" in the eyes of Padi.
This is the problem I have with Padi and other organisations like it (SSI to name another). They tell their students they know their shit when in reality they don't and when said students are faced with actual life threatening situations they have no clue what to do and probably got themselves into the situation off of terrible training.
If you're going to do any course post cert take the GUE fundamentals first, that course will get you the minimum level of training to be considered a safe diver in terms of experience and knowledge.
Just my thoughts, but hey, maybe I'm a little biased, I've been diving for a very extended period of time and come from a primarily cave diving background with some tech in there too, that might be why I think GUE is so great.

the fact of the matter is that if you are just doing recreational diving a basic course fulfills all you need to know. there is no need for night diving or whatever that other guy said. just go dive at night. but your level of autism about diving is fathoms deeper than normal.

I acknowledge your argument, and to a point I see the holes in my post. A standard recreational diving course will cover the bare minimum of what you need to know to dive, and for most, it will be enough. However, I still think that basic recreational dive courses should be more extensive as diving is not exactly a very safe activity in comparison to other activities. Now to get onto your point about GUE. I know guys who have upwards of 1,000 dives and they would argue the exact same thing. However, not all divers would like to venture into cave or tech, and that's fine, in which case GUE would probably not be the first choice as cave and tech is what they specialise in, but I'd still argue that new divers should give the GUE fundamentals course a try if they plan to make diving a regular hobby (that being around 50 dives a year)

i wish i would have made a career of diving when i was young. i even had a divemaster try to recruit me when i was 20. but i now work a regular job, as do most divers.

i didn't look to in depth into GUE but it looks like the logical extension of basic diving, which pretty much all courses are except cave. which is why i refuse to take any other courses because i can do math on my own and look shit up. also, since i am not an explorer, i normally pay people to take me to new interesting things.

in my experience, new divers know if they want to dive the first time they go 30ft down. if they don't freak out they love it. and they study on their own. i am in IT and it is sort of similar. you only get the certification if you are trying to prove something. otherwise you just fucking do it.

SSI seems especially bad at this as the SSI diver who crossed over to BSAC in my club has like 10 different cards and half of them seem pretty redundant.

In answer to OP's question, getting a mask that fits you and doesn't leak is easy and relatively cheap. Other than that, I'd recommend a drysuit if the water temperatures you dive in are anything like the ones we have in the UK. I'd got for a tailor fitted one if you can, it's a little pricy but the warmth and dryness are well worth it in my opinion. That and it will last a lifetime if properly maintained.

buy actual paste toothpaste. ultrabrite is about all that exists anymore, everything else is gel. pour toothpaste into mask, and really work it into the glass. then every time you dive, spit into the inside of the mask and wipe it around to coat.

i have no idea why this works, but it does.

OP here, due to practicality and cheapness (plus, my diving club provides in everything else) I have laid eyes on underwater torch. In our murky waters they are usefull for everything between seeing and signalling your buddy (look, it is a lobstercorpse!) So not really anything livesaving, ergo can buy cheap chinese crap and see how long it lasts? They are sold for about 10 bucks and state 100m and 900 lumen, good buy?

My parents owned a dive shop together. Diving wad my dad's livelihood for a while, so needless to say scuba is pretty important in my family. Dad had over 3,000 dives and is probably one of the most experienced divers in the world. But the one thing he will never do again is a cave dive. So, anyone have cave diving stories? I can share my dad's story if anyone is interested.

I got one, not exactly a cave diving story, but still related.
I was out with a buddy for a dive where the planned depth would be around 50m. So we set off. Now it's worth pointing out that we were doing this dive relatively close to land. The beginning of the dive goes smoothly, we reach a max depth of 51.5m, stay there for about 10mins and then start ascending again. We reach our first deco, no hitches, continue up. Hit our second deco, now our second deco was our longest of the three we had set up. There was no line set up at the site as it was a site we were just checking out, so we had no line to hold on to or stick to during our deco stops, and since anyone who has done a bit of tech knows deco stops can get pretty dull, we decided to look around a little bit while holding the same depth. Didn't really find anything interesting, but swimming around a bit was better than just chilling in the same spot not doing anything, so we continue up. Now here's where it gets interesting. We hit a ceiling on our ascension to our third and final deco stop. We had no clue how there was a ceiling on top of us. Since the area we were at wasn't well documented we were pretty blind going in, and on top of that visibility was pretty shit, that was why we didn't spot the ceiling sooner. Now this is dangerous, we had no way of ascending, thus, we were at risk of fucking up our entire deco plan, we both had a bailout tank of oxygen for emergencies. But it was still quite a dangerous situation to be in as we would have to ascend to the surface somehow as we didn't have unlimited breathable air down there. So we came to the conclusion that when we were looking around during our second deco we must have messed up our pathing somehow and drifted away from where we started, so all we could do was look around again and try find a way out of the situation we were in.

So basically, all we did was start looking around for a way out. We did this for a couple mins, easily the most stressful couple mins of my life, but we were both able to keep our cool. Quite an anticlimactic ending really. After a couple mins of heading directly North, we found the way out. We had somehow gotten ourselves into an underwater wide mouth cave without realising it during our little exploration session at our second deco. Quite a story for the pub. I have a few more interesting stories from actual planned cave dives, and not accidental ones.

I'm quite interested in your father's story, do share, however I'm quite sure it won't change my opinion on cave diving as cave diving is the greatest form of diving (that's my opinion please don't hate me /out/). Hard to believe how there are so many people here who won't even give cave diving a try, it's fucking great if you're not claustrophobic at all.
