not stalked but close. I used to like to run at night, and occasionally trail run during a full moon. I would run on these trails on the mountains above our neighborhood. One night around 11pm on a full moon i was running on a trail and stopped when there was a bunch of noise from the bushes just off the trail. I stopped expecting a Coyote, which I would see fairly commonly up there. Instead a Cougar comes out of the bushes and just stands there, watching me. I walked slowly down the trail, standing as tall as I can. The cougar doesnt move at all. It just stood there watching me until I finally walked out of sight.
...I then ran straight out of the hills. I never ran there again after dark (though I have hiked there after dark a few times, with a head lamp).
Also, I thought I would just throw this out. All the animals I have run into while running while I have lived in Washington, Idaho and Montana: Deer, Coyote, Moose, Bear, Fox, Badger, Mountain Goat, Bighorn Sheep, Elk, Turkey, Raccoon, Skunks, Porcupines and all sorts of smaller mammals (squirrels, marmots, rabbits, chipmonks, pikas, etc.)....I've basically come across every large mammal in the region except the Lynx and Wolf. I have never seen a either . And only seen the one cougar, and only one fox. Bear and Moose probably half a dozen times each, deer and coyotes all the time. The bear, cougar and moose, I turned back and went the other way. Everything else just runs away from you.
