Hello anons,
Well, I'm 26 and haven't ever really gone fishing. Me and three friends are all going in the morning. What do I need to know not to look like an ass? I bought a rod and reel, some line, bobbers, weights, and shit. Wat do?

thats a spinner. hold with the reel pointed down, take your index finger and grab a bit of string, flip the wirey looking thing up and pull the rod back, as you bring it forward to cast it out remove your finger that was around the string. generally the wirey thingy will fall down when you star reeling, or you can just flip it back down.

weights will let you cast farther but too many will sink the bobber.

and if you have a bobber like whats in the op pic you do want sinkers, other wise it will just lay flat and when you get a bite it will stand up, with a sinker it stands and goes under as you get a bite and is much easier to see.

On reels their is normally a little switch somewhere on it. This switch allows you to reel forward or backwards if flipped on, Its default is just forward reeling, When you had a large fish on, you want to switch so you can reel reel, and reel a bit backwards if needed so the line doesn't snap off and reel reel ect.

o hai noob here, i've never gone fishing either, i bought the rod, reel, line, hooks, sinkers and plastic lure baits.

I don't know how to load the reel with the line. I know there are some products that make it easlier like berkeley or other tricks with pencil and bucket with water? I don't want to load it all twisted or how do i know which directions I should do it in?

Also whats the point setting the drag (that knob on the reel)? what does it do and how does it help?

Also going to be hard to identify those fishes..so many. Then you have to learn the bag limits for each fish, how long/heavy they have to be. So many regulations, I wanted to start off pier fishing (free) then eventually get a fishing license (50-60$ a year in CA) so I can fish some of the lakes and ponds in the park near me. But damn gas is expensive and going out to the pier to fish free isn't even cheap. Now even if you pier fish there are all those stamps you need even if you dont get a license.

take a pencil and put it thru the middle of the spool of line.

insert pencil into the ground or have a buddy hold it.

take some line and guide it thru all the eyelets and tie it around the spool on the reel.

begin reeling and the line will wrap around the reel and keep reeling till you got plenty of line, don't fully fill the reel but also don't fill it with just enough because you will lose line, thru snags, snaps, changing hooks/lures etc.

pliers and a knife. you'll need pliers if something happens with the hook or to clip on weights.

i've never had much luck with fake bait so live worms are pretty handy. depends what you're fishing for and where.

The line on your pole has a test rating. 4lbs test, 6 lbs test, 8 lbs test, etc. Basically means it will take 4lbs of weight to break that line. Setting the drag so the fish can pull on it makes sure you can catch a 20lbs fish on 4lbs test after he's tired from trying to fight your line.

I caught a 25 lbs catfish on 4lbs test. It took me 2 hours of reeling in and letting him fight back out with a relaxed drag. Soon he was so tired I just dragged him to shore. Shit was so cash.

After a while you will learn how the water temp affects certain breeds of fish and what lures to use at what time of year depending on water clarity. It's actually fun even if you dont catch any fish. I just picked up 2 fishing kayaks from dick's. Bass fishing is pretty fun. a 1lbs bass feels like a 5lbs bass from the fight they put up. Also, use green pumpkin senkos rigged texas style for bass. Last year it was killer.

Consider a hemostat for general-purpose pinching and holding. I'm a terrible fisherman, but on the rare occasion I do catch a fish, the hemostat makes removing itty-bitty hooks from itty-bitty mouths really easy.

I have also heard many people murmur breathlessly about their love for the Unhookem (tm).

Ok, good advice all. I was planning on throwing some line in the yard, to noa avail. I started sharpening a knife, then built a fire. Now, there's far less fish everywhere. The fish that are here are 60% stocked fish for the out-of-towners. To top it off, you can't eat the local fish anymore because of mercury, PCBs, pesticides, and various heavy metals. Predator fish have the most of that crap so local bass and catfish are no longer on the menus. The real ass kicker is that the pollution isn't even ours, its from 200-300 miles away where the large cities are with tons of factories. For a few years, you could eat x amount of x fish based on your weight.

Now, everything is strictly catch and release here, even the stocked fish. In the stores all the "fresh" fish is from China. Even freezer fish like fish sticks and patties are becoming outrageously priced now.

The most painless death is considered to be whacking them with a heavy stick on the head and then cutting their throat open.
When the fish are outside of the water, their eyes are usually pointed downwards. If whacked correctly, the eyes are centered and the fish looks "dead". To cut their throat open, insert the knife tn one of the gills and slice it. Afterwards, face the blade against its neck and slice until blood streams out.
I've heard that letting them bleed out keeps the meat from getting bitter.
Another option is catch and release. It helps keep up the fish population.

as for your question, fishing is pretty simple, put the hook on the line and the bait on the hook. the bober goes as far away from the hook as for how deep you want to fish, if your fishing more than 5ish feet get a slip bober. as a general rule of thumb try to avoid fishing right next to other boats/people and dont tangle the lines. 95% of fishing is waiting and 4% of it is drinking, the rest is skill. so you will be fine

Etc, etc. Just have patience. Ask other people for advice, do not give up. Once you get the hang of it, it is a ton of fun. Fishing is also a bit of a science. Specific breeds behave in different manners, and this all changes based on the season and moon phase, temp, etc. Also, fish like structure (docks, rocks, pillars, bridges, reefs etc.)

Do you know if the other guys are fishing with bobbers or lures, if they are doing lures they are going to be casting and retrieving the whole time and it would kind of be a bummer to be the only one sitting there with a bobber. If you are going to be releasing the fish, de-barb your hooks so they come off easier especially since you have not really ever taken fish off a hook (just take pliers and squeeze down on the barb to flatten it) also bring them along, can come in handy getting the hook out of fish that swallow the hook. Man, after reading all these threads I really want to give fishing a shot, I love eating fish, and there's a big lake (Quarry Lakes in Fremont) really close to my house, fuck I could go out there and get me some dinner regularly if I wanted to.

I really have no clue what I'm doing though, and I definitely won't be fishing from a boat since I'm pretty poorfag.

What kind of basic equipment do I need? As I understand it, the rods are different for what kind of fishing you plan on doing.

After I left, one of my buddies that was still out there had a police boat come up and check his license. 30 is better than a 1,000 fine IMO.

I got a rod/reel combo for 20 bucks, I'm no pro, so it forks for me. Then bought line for 4 bucks, a little tackle box for 7 and a sixer for 8. All in all, I spent under 70, but dont have to buy anything for the next times I go out. All in all, I'd say fishing is a cheap thing to take up.

The great thing about fishing is that when you walk into your local tackle store, the assistant/owner is more than happy to address any and all questions you may have and what gear you can buy for your budget/style of fishing, as well as give good advice (and tell you stories, all fishermen love to tell stories). Granted, this isn't as common in massive chain stores but that goes without saying. I suggest going down to the nearest tackle shop with a few bucks and starting from there. Just make sure to avoid cheap no name rod combos spooled with fishing line that you can snap with your hands.

Yeah the most commonly known one is fishing for catfish at night. They normally come out of deeper water at that time into shallow waters where they prey on minnows and smaller fish (which is why live minnows/small fish are the best bait for catching catfish at night).

If you didn't see any fish related action during the whole time it may be that you just were in the wrong place. Try some other place, go where you've seen people catch something or just ask local fishermen. Some people do have habit of misdirecting other fishermen from their spots but if you tell that you are a complete rookie then usually they'll tell you at least the second tier places.

You might want to try some other live bait too, nightcrawlers are really good all-arounders. There really isn't a fish that wouldn't bite on them.

Learning which fish is what comes with time. You catch a dozen Snapper and you'll know what a Snapper looks like from them on. I've never met anyone who can remember the bag limits for everything off the top of their head. It would be pretty pointless to sit there memorising bag limits anyway, as they're subject to change. I just have something like pic related (biggest I could find in GIS as they don't want to give it away for free). They sell them for like $10 in my country and it lists all the fish you're likely to catch in that state, as well as legal sizes and bag limits. Hell, it even tells you things like what's good to eat and that. They're laminated, so I just throw it in the bottom of my tackle box.
