How effective would one of these be at heating a small one person tent? Of course I would need to figure out how to make a portable chimney. Would it be worth it in the winter?

I bought a Firebox and took it out once.

I will probably never take it out again on any trip where I am actually carrying gear any real distance.

I tried using scavenged wood and chopped wood chips to cook with it, but with the limited space I couldn't get enough heat out of it to bring water to boil. Maybe it didn't help that it was around -15C every time I tried, but regardless it didn't work. I tried making top-down and bottom-up fires in it with the same results.

the honey stove is better ( if a bit more fiddly to put together as a twig burner as it has a bigger combustion space and youre not constantly having to feed it

they are fun but not really substitute for a a small gas stove

I think the honey stove works really well with a trangia burner also. It's nice to have a small wood fire sometimes just to be comfy in the evening, if not to grill some yum food.

You don't if its a 1990s or later model. Basically this style is ok. I did not strip it, I just burned a really hot and long fire in it then used a wire pad and scrubbed off the flaked paint. Been eating off one for nearly a decade and my friend wanted it so I gave it to him and made a new one. I have a wire grate in the bottom for air flow and 20 skewers, 10 for a grate top and 10 to double up or cook with. Its strictly a wood stove though, not enough area for charcoal to work. The best part is portability. I can throw in the skewers, a fire steel, newspaper and enough precut wood for a good meal then pop on the lid and tie it to or clip it to my pack. Actually got the idea from a hobo when I hitchhiked in the early 2000s.

Hell I love my 1st gen full size fire box. The 2nd gen nano looks great but too small for my personal needs. The full size fire box cooks great with charcoal too, cooks very clean that way.

Yeah. I do like a small fire though nice for making toast and coffee, and comfy fire to play with during those long nights. Small fourpanel mode is also nifty for heating up a cup of water.

Yeah my Bushbox Pocket Stove sucks.

I have to constantly feed it twigs/small pieces of wood or the fire will eventually go out. I dont thnk I ever got my cup of water to a boil on the two occasions I tried using it, just hot enough for some hot cocoa.

I plan on buying a fuel canister setup but would still like to give one of these wood burning stove a chance.

I think if you're primarily interested in fire, the big firebox is probably best but a bit on the heavy side.

Big bushbox is good as well. Same with all those gasifier stoves, but the common thing is they need to be big enough to get some coals and airflow. I like these efficient gasifier stoves because they go well with leave no trace principles. You get a small efficient fire, extract maximum energy from the fuel and then only have the bare minimum of ash.

With my honey stove, all that is left is a very fine white ash which is easy to spread across the ground. One thing to note with all of these stoves is to put something under them to avoid scorching the earth.

Nah. I'm in my 30s, over the years I've bought all sorts, the esbit stove I've had since I was about 8.

I run with a Jetboil now, but its' still fun to keep stuff like this handy- when my nephew grows up enough I'll probably pass a few on to him ect

I am gutted about these, they released in the UK about a week after I shelled out for my Jetboil. I've had a bit of fiddle around at my local outdoor shop and the burner units do fit the old Jetboil cups. Apparently you can buy the MiniMo burners separately for about $40 if youre in the States, but us Britbongs are stuck- if we want one we have to buy the whole damn thing again.
