Foggerdy didn't respect the desert and didn't believe he could ever get lost on a hunting trip and that was his only mistake. This is what led him to leave his camp/car with nothing but his rifle. Even a person with great survival skills can easily underestimate dangers and make foolish decisions an untrained person with common sense never would.
