Honestly? My buff. I picked it up as an impulse/after thought item when I was stocking up for some backpacking and /trv/ and it quickly became one of my favorite things.

I've actually got two now, since I bought a wool one for winter.

My jetboil. Sure it's heavyish or whatever but it gives me clean, hot water in a couple of minutes. I cook my meals in freezer bags and make coffee out of the remaining water.

I have a Blackwolf Classic 25lr that I 'borrowed' off my day in 2008 and use pretty much daily, it's nice having a great backpack i can also use /out/.

Similarly, i got a kathmandu rain jacket that folds up into one of its own pockets, weighs almost nothing, water/windproof enough for going out where I live, carry it with me most days. Feels kinda cool wearing it in the city, plus out bush.

My sleeping pad, Exped DownMat UL 7. I made do with the typical accordian foam before because I wasn't sure how much of a difference it would make. Got the exped on sale for $95, holy shit it is amazing. I can sleep on my side and not touch the ground. I feel like a king every time I take it out.

actually, these pants. super comfy, stretchy waist so they always fit perfect, light and tough, and the pants zip down the sides with a mesh inseam so they breathe in the summer too. they're fantastic for hiking in anything warmer than like 45 degrees. they also dry out really fast.

Laplander folding saw and my mora. I hate that moras have become a joke round here but I legitimately love it. It cost next to nothing and takes all the abuse I throw at it.
The Laplander just sails through anything, if you don't own one just get one and try it out. Again they are cheap and awesome.
Between the two I have done some impressive woodwork (for a noob in the middle of nowhere with no tools)

I used the MSR hand filter, it's about 1L/min at max efficiency, which means completely clean and you're pumping like a 13 year old who figured out how to turn off safe search.
The gravity bag is around the same regardless, and to clean it you just put the clean bag on top and it flushes out the system.

have to say my hilleberg tent. it's always been dry and cozy, even in high winds and horizontal rain. just have to setup away from lesser tents to avoid being kept awake by their flappy noises.

i also really like my 10g fishing kit. line, two hooks and sinkers. add stick and worm, get fed. and the vacum packed poncho that i've never used but may save my life on the day hike when i break a leg.

On the bike (2gal tank), I can do 100 dualsport miles (some street, easy dirt) pretty easily.

Technical dirt, I've burned most of the tank in 30 miles before.
Best I've gotten was about 180 miles on a tank through Yellowstone (45m/h flat pavement, 6th gear idle holds me there).

I haven't used my debit card since some black chick at checkers stole the number and tried to make a $700 purchase online from Target. This was so out of the norm for my spending activity with the card that the bank rejected the charge and killed the card. She tried about 4 more charges online with decreasing amounts. This happened on a Friday. I left on a camping trip with some friends on Saturday. I used the cash I had on me to buy a face cord of firewood on the way to the spot. When I tried to use an ATM I found out that my account was locked. Spent the trip with no cash.

tl;dr
Don't let your card, credit or debit out of your sight even for a second.

but god damn is it nostalgia feeling to have one of these going during the evening time in your tent/shelter/cabin/cave. Mine is brass which only enhances the ole timey feels.

The only two plus sides i can really think of is the light isn't very harsh which is nice, and it'll last 8+ hours. (maybe 9 or 10 tbh), I like to go to sleep with one of these things as a night light cause the boogey man obviously wont go near a light source and even if this shit tips over or falls off the chain, it's surrounded drop resistant glass to put out the flame, all doubles as windshield.

So the poncho liner is definitely a thing to be worn under a separate poncho, right?
I feel stupid asking this but two things make me want to ask this:
*they have camo on as if they're an outside thing, not an inside thing.
*reading some accounts of them makes it seem like the liner is much more important than the poncho.

Also my favorite for all the same reasons. With the reflector it actually gives off pretty decent light.

Candles for it are cheap enough at MEC in Canada, but when I was in Australia they cost the earth the few occasions i could find them. I'd brought a few with me and rationed them.

meh, those typical ikea tea candles don't last long, you'd have to carry a crazy amount of them in weight to equal the same 8+ hour burn time as the UCO candles. like 2x the mass most likely. plus switching out candles is a pain, i'd hate to do that 2-3 times a night.

Yeah but I'm not American, I don't think you can buy uco candles anywhere in my country.
So it's shipping fee + long wait vs they're almost giving them away in any supermarket.

Just got a new recording with rig and was so excite I had to post it. It's really windy today so I found a tree with a bunch of branches rubbing against it and strapped a couple contact mics to it. Really cool to hear the fibers stretching and rattling inside the tree. What fun!

There's a tea candle version of the UCO lantern too, stores another candle in the base, pretty sure it takes the same reflector. Some cheap tea candles don't give much light but the Ikea ones are pretty good, and cheap.

Lantern itself lasts a long time (my original style one is ~20 years old) with replaceable glass so it's not expensive at all in the long run.

They'll last a couple hours at least so that's 4 tea lights, not really a significant difference unless you're outfitting for a year. And like I said if you're travelling, the official UCO candles can be rare and expensive, or nonexistent. I prefer the original but if I was going abroad these days, I'd bring a micro.

Wish it took votive candles instead though, that would be the best. Maybe I could hack one.

As lame as this really is, I always bring one or two Backwoods cigars and I get all excited to have them at night after dinner by the fire. In a comfy sorta way, being able to enjoy a mild smoke kinda makes the whole thing special. And I never ever touch them when I'm not /out/.
