So /out/, I'm going to be hunting deer for the first time this november. It's in a kinda rugged desert/mountainous unit for whitetail. Has anyone ever done a similar hunt and have some suggestions? Or anyone general hunting tips?

If you don't see any deer wave a white handkerchief. Flick it up and down a few times.

If there are other hunters nearby they will fire a shot or two to let you know there are deer nearby. It's common courtesy.

General tips: don't make any fucking noise, don't smoke, piss or shit near your hunting spot. No fast movements when they approach you. Always move when they're not directly looking.
Other than that, try to get them in the vital region.

It's super hard and you need lots of land for that. Deer are the kings of paranoia man, they smell and hear everything. You ever seen how they eat even if nobody is around? They look both ways 2-3 times, make a step. Then they look again, and another step. Takes them like 10 minutes before they actually put something into their mouths.
Or maybe that's just in my region, I don't know.

Staying downwind is probably the most important thing. And move very, very slowly. If you think you're moving too slow, go slower 'cause you're still too fast.

But yeah, go slow and work the wind. Wear silent clothes like wool or fleece. I haven't noticed camo does sweet fuck all. I've stalked up on as many deer wearing bright clothes as I have camo patterns.

Camo is waaaay overrated for the most part; it's certainly still quite useful (especially in situations where you're relatively easy to see) but it's really just a slight edge when all is said and done.

I hunt in thick forested public land in the southeast where I don't have many opportunities to drive two hours away to scout so I hit the same few spots each season. I have seen more deer in the late morning and afternoon while walking around (quietly) on access trails and closed off dirt roads.

For an edge you can put apple juice in a nalgene bottle and dump it over some bushes every few feet to create a nice scent to bring in the deer. Juice may be considered baiting in your state so be discrete about it.

This. Deer can't see for shit. I've had deer walk within 10 yards of me in full blaze orange. Supposedly they can see blue but if its warm, I'm in blue jeans and they still don't see me. But as soon as you move, though, they'll bust you. Secret is to be still and silent and play the wind.

probably this. I fish but I do this as well. Watch the water for a bit and usually see a fish rise, then stalk it and cast to it and catch it. If hunting deer is anything like fishing, you need to get in the head of your prey. You need to think where they do the least work possible, feel safest, where they like to be at what hours, what they eat. all that.

I haven't really hunted in treeless terrain but what I've seen others do is: Find a nice prominent spot and just glass until you find a nice animal. When you do, check that you are downwind using the bic technique that someone else mentioned then slowly and deliberately stalk the animal.

Blaze orange Ali G camo is the best for hunting because deer can't see orange and it's broken up to help you blend in with the surroundings.

Many jurisdictions do not allow dogs to be used to pursue deer. Some allow dogs to be used to track wounded game. Some do not allow dogs for big game at all.

The technique you're describing is known as 'pushing bush' and can be done just fine with humans - no need for dogs. You just need to make sure you know exactly what angle your hunting partners are coming from so you can shoot in a safe direction.

Bring a head lamp in case you have to drag the deer back when it's dark.

If you really want an easy kill. Get apples and cover them in molasses and let the dear come to you.
