But what if you dont know the average speed... of a human walking. Google says 3MPH, but thats sounds wrong if the trail is uphill inawoods with obstacles.

If you're asking what kind of mph you should be doing, it is hugely dependent on the terrain, individual fitness level and load-out weight.

An average person with a light pack could probably maintain 3mph over easy terrain for a few a few hours to a day. US Marines are expected to maintain 3mph with 70lbs of gear on their back over rough/undeveloped terrain for multiple days in a row.

Start with conservative estimates and keep track of your times when hiking. Vertical loss speed might be negative. Google assumes a sidewalk and easy grade with no load.

Most of the trails just state the length in meters.
I been doing calculation of very rough:
3mph converted to meters per hour: = 4828 meters
so if the hike is listed as 4.8 km or 4828 meters its about 1 1/2 hike.. 2 if sightseeing / breaks.

other math:
convert meters to kilometers: 4.828 km
kilometers to miles: 2.9 miles
